? re painting a red wall

Would you do two coats of primer and hope for one coat of paint, or just one coat of primer?

I usually just slap paint on the wall, but I've never had to paint over deep red before...

Re: ? re painting a red wall

  • We painted over red.  When I asked at the paint store they gave us a high hiding primer and tinted it grey (I think).  It took one coat of primer and one of paint.

  • We painted over a really crazy bright blue and it took 3 coats of primer and 2 coats of paint.

  • I feel you need to go for 2-3 coats of primer to get the real look.

When we moved in our house, our LR was red. I did two coats of primer since I was using a lighter color paint.

  • I just painted a navy-blue bedroom, changing it to light sage green in one coat -- no primer, no second coat.  The paint was Benjamin Moore Aura,, which supposedly is paint and primer in one.  It is really impressive!  It is more than twice what I usually pay for paint, but who cares -- the time and aches it saved me made it worth it.

I don't know if red is harder to cover than navy blue -- DARK navy blue --  but I cannot believe it would take more than two coats of this paint.  And you might be lucky and be able to do the job in one.

  • I have painted a over a red wall before.  Get a super good quality primer, I don't remember what I used but I get most of my paint from Sherwin Williams.  I still usually go for 2 coats of primer and ALWAYS two coats of paint.  It takes more work but for me the end result is flawless.

THIS EXACTLY! I was very hesitant to buy such expensive paint, but we covered traffic cone orange walls with a light sage green with ONE coat of Benjamin Moore Aura. It was amazing.

I have heard that the Behr (Home Depot) brand of primer+paint all-in-one also does a really good job. I think Consumer Reports actually rates it the same as Benjamin Moore.
