H&M sizing? Or slight vent, perhaps.

I've been shopping at H&M for years and have worn the same size (L/14, sadly) for a couple years now. Just last Friday, I wore a dress (size 14) that I bought at H&M last summer. It's not just H&M, that's basically my size at all stores (sigh.)

I went there today on my lunch break because I had heard they were having a big sale. Every single thing I tried on was too small, including a dress marked as a 14, but the zipper wouldn't even come CLOSE to zipping up. Another dress didn't have a zipper, but the chest in a 14 was SO tight that there was no way I could wear it appropriately. Strangely, there was one top I tried on that was incredibly oversized on me, but the majority were just way too tight.

Normally, I would hit myself for gaining weight -- but unless the clothes in my closet have grown in size with me, I don't think I've gotten any bigger. Has anyone else noticed wonky sizing at H&M lately? It's so frustrating and totally shoots down my self-esteem.

On top of that, they used to carry size D bras, but I could only find A, B, and C there today....so I ended up plonking down $100 at Victoria's Secret Semi-Annual sale -- haha!

I mean, I'd be happy losing some weight, but is H&M totally out of my grasp right now?

Re: H&M sizing? Or slight vent, perhaps.

  • H&M is a European store. European sizes are cut smaller than US sizes.

I am surprised though that this wasn't an issue before? Maybe it was just that particular dress?

As for bras, I have only ever shopped for bras in H&M in Germany (much larger underwear sections than here) and back then I was a B cup so I never really paid attention. I do know that you wont find D cups too much in European stores, they have them but fewer.. kind of like shoes sizes that not many people wear.

But then again if this wasn't an issue before then I guess this is not a good explanation  :(

  • I think sizing has been changing according to the trends in clothing.  I used to be able to walk in or order online at old navy and gap and without even trying the item on, be confident that it would fit.  I haven't gained weight in probably 2 years and if anything have lost a few pounds along the way yet now it seems like everything I buy requires me trying the item on even though the size is the typical size I was used to getting.

    I can't shop at H&M but I totally get what you're saying.

  • I don't shop at H&M so I can't help you on the sizing issue, but this is why I do 90% of my clothes shopping online. Sometimes I do have to return things, but going to a store and trying stuff on and having nothing fit me....it's not how I'd like to spend my time. It's depressing.
