post-partum depression, or drama queen?

at what point (short of hearing Jesus tell you to drown your children in the bathtub) do you determine that a bad mood is more than a bad mood and could maybe be PPD?

how do you determine if it's something to ask your doctor about, or if you are simply looking for a dramatic excuse for your cruddy mood?

Re: post-partum depression, or drama queen?

  • I think it was about 8-9 mo pp when the bottom fell out for me.  I had already been b!tchy at home.  I even lashed out at IL's - really a dark moment for me.  And then at work...I just couldn't take it anymore.  I'd suggest that you mention something to your doc.  For me, I called my gen prac.  I had an appt the next day and I went in with just the expectation to "talk" and I asked for a referral to talk to a therapist.  Turns out for me, I just needed to talk to gen prac...and he gave me an Rx.

It's ok.  You're ok and things will get better.  Just go and talk to someone.  Big HUGS!!!!

  • You should most definitely ask your doctor if you are thinking it might be PPD.  Maybe look it up in What to Expect the First Year or online, but I am sure it is different for everyone.  I think I remember that mood swings are common the first weeks but if you are feeling down after a few months you might have PPD.  Good luck, hugs, call your doc.

  • I just think you're a drama queen... jk.

Go and talk to the Dr., couldn't hurt right?

Or, as always, the alternative would be to go out for drinks!

  • I felt low, sad, always tired, and in general felt like "everything sucked". I didn't care to fight (at all...so unlike me...lol)...didn't care whether I wore a t-shirt 6 sizes to big to the store or whether I showered, I was in such a rut. I think at that point I started to realize that something wasn't quite right. (believe Ella was 2 months at this point...)

Called my dr, left a message and then she just called something in for me. I had mentioned to her at the 6 week re-check that I felt low but wanted to hold off on meds. Going on the meds was the best thing for me:)

    Wish you luck and love!

  • alisa, thanks for the link.. and everyone, too, the suggestion to call my dr. are sound. I think I will call..
