Down or down alternative comforter?
Is it better to get a down or a down alternative comforter? I found some down comforters that say they are machine washable, which is a must since it will be for my 3 year old's bed. Also, where are good places to look if I don't want a plain white one?
Re: Down or down alternative comforter?
While there might be technical differences, IMO, down alternative is the same fiberfill you've had in a comforter since you were little. It's the same synthetic fluffy stuff it always was - just different marketing.
Down and down alternative are always plain because they're meant to go inside a duvet cover. Like pp said, buy the pretty cover and it doesn't matter what's inside it. For that reason, my 2 guest room duvets are stuffed full with old comforters from college. So long as the cover isn't see-thru, it doesn't matter what kind of comforter's put inside it. So if you aren't set on a particular comforter for warmth or health or whatever reasons, just buy a cheapie comforter at Target and call it good.

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
Down is typically more expensive since it is feathers. Also, it isn't good for allergy sufferers.
I've had both. I prefer the alternative just because I don't like the occasional feather that slips out and I think the alternative feels better in terms of softness, but that's just preference.
Either will probably be white and is meant to slip inside a duvet.
The main difference between down and down alternative is that because down is real feather, it breathes better, so the real down comforter will keep you warm in the winter, but also breath and keep you cool in the summer. The down alternative does not breath as well so it doesn't cool off as well during the summer.
If it's going to be for a 3-year old, I think the down alternative would work just fine. Price point wise it's more economical, and easier to wash. It's def a better option than any print bedding, which are generally not as well made and fall apart or become misshapen after washing. Like PP said, duvet covers come in a lot of different options so you should be able to find one that you like.

Company Store.
You can get colors, but you'd want to put it in a duvet cover. I wash my 19 year old down comforter from there in my kind sized washer/dryer.
