Hi ladies,
I am not a regular on this board (yet?), but I hope you'll have me here.
DH and I have a 1950s ranch house that we've been slowly updating since we bought it 3 yrs ago. The big project this year is siding.
It currently has cedar siding that badly needs a paint job, and is rotting in a few spots. I was very hesitant to consider vinyl siding because I just like the look of wood better. However, I've been converted. We'd not only have to paint the cedar siding, but it probably also needs to be replaced at this point. On top of that, houses from the 50s did not obviously do any Tyvek-type wrapping to keep bugs and water out, like they do now. (Insulation is not an issue anymore - we had a lot of insulation work done last year.)
So anyway, I just have some questions so I know what to expect before we jump in and talk to contractors. Anyone done this recently?
1. Our neighbor got siding about 10 yrs ago and she said they just put the vinyl right over her wood siding. This seems wrong to me. Like I said, we want the benefit of the Tyvek wrapping and to make sure there is no water/bug damage (it's a possibility). Is this the norm?
2. What usually happens with window trim? Is it normal to replace that with vinyl? I feel like I've seen some houses that keep their wood trim. Will vinyl trim look tacky?
3. We are not looking to use the cheapest kind of vinyl; it is really important to us that it looks nice (though we are budget-conscious and definitely don't want the Rolls Royce of vinyl either). Any recommendations on brands or styles?
4. What did you learn in the process that you wish you'd known before you started?
Thanks in advance!
Re: Talk to me about vinyl siding.
What part of the country do you live in?
And, do other homes, aside from that one neighbor, have vinyl siding too?
In my opinion I would never install vinyl siding on my home. I think it lloks fairly tacky, but that is just my opinion.
If you do decide to install vinyl it would be best to remove the old siding first.
