My ladies w/ migranes & birth control options

So ladies with migranes... know how hard it can be to find a b/c option -i'm there.

Well from some previous research online and on here from some smart ladies.. my obgyn suggested I take the DEPO shot... and after reading responses to that.. No thank you. (I do know some girls that have taken it and been fine, but I just don't think it's for me-because I have had some recent acne flareups and my obgyn says it would makes the acne worse).

But my obgyn says now Nuva Ring would be a better option. Any adivce on this type of b/c? I have endometerosis and so I need to do some form of b/c, So I was hoping to get some advice from ladies on/used Nuva Ring.. Good and the bad, tips with placement etc?

Re: My ladies w/ migranes & birth control options

  • I talked to my neurologist about this, and he told me to find what birth control worked for me, and HE would work out the MIGRAINE meds around that.  You seem to be doing it the other way around.  Your answer might be to try a good form of birth control that works for you first, then try to find a migraine medication or treatment regimen that works around that.

  • I've been on the NR for 7 years now and I love it!! I have no cramps anymore and I used to have really bad cramps. I am regular down to within a couple hours. It is pricier than other birth controls but totally worth it in my mind. I do get one migraine once a month on the day I start my period but I don't know if that is a result of my period or my birth control. I just know not to plan anything important on that day.

  • Thanks girls that is very helpful.

And this is my obgyns way of planning around my migranes, Not the other way around. So I am just going with what he says. Ive tried regualy b/c before and it just makes my hands and feet go numb so we are doing NUva Ring next instead of the Yaz I tried before. So hopefully this helps. Good to hear some good new about it!

    Thanks jneelpsych88!

  • My migraines were pretty hardcore on Yasmin/Yaz/Ocella/BeYaz (I was on all four at one point, lol).  I'm on Quasense (generic for Seasonale) now by choice and it seems to be a bit better, but my acne got worse.

  • I have fibromyalgia (migraines included) and I had a hard time finding birth control. I tried a few brands of pills and always had a bad time. Mirena caused really bad cramps and I had to get it taken out after 5 months. I didn't want to go on Nuvaring because of the cancer link. I'm on the Depo shot and so far it seems to be working out fine, and I've been on it for 3 years.

  • @CHARBAKES A friend of mine at work also has what you have and depo is the only thing that works for her and if she misses a shot she knows. That is one painful disease to have thats for sure. Hope it continues to work for you!

And Nuva Ring has a cancer link?

  • I don't get migranes too often, but I wanted to pop in and say I was on Nuva Ring for about 3 years, and it was AWESOME. Pop 'er in and forget about it. (and in my personal experience, it never really got in the way during intimate moments, but sometimes it got pulled out. Just check to see if you can feel it when using the restroom post-coitus) Good Luck !

I was on Yasmin for 8 years and before going off of it, I had the absolute worst migraines. Once my refills ran out, I stopped taking it and elected to not get on anything else. I read online that it is one of the worst pills to get out of your system. Terrible acne is just one of the many results of going off Yasmin. Aldactone, the diuretic that is in Yasmin, can be prescribed alone for acne. My migraines have gotten much better. I don't get them nearly as frequently and I know what triggers mine, so I tend to avoid the triggers.

  • I was using NR for almost a year when I went back to my OBGYN because of my terrible migraines. She asked if I could tell I was going to have a migraine before one happened. When I told her that I could always tell I was going to have one, she IMMEDIATELY took me off of NR. She said that there was a higher chance of a blood clot in the brain while on NR, along with other types of some b/c pills.

At that point, she recommended the Depo shot or the Mirena. I decided to go with the Mirena (even though I've never had a child, she said this option was okay for me).

When your doctor says that they'll try to find a migraine mediation around your b/c really frightens me. Be extremely careful with that!

     Hope this helps!!

Thank you! It truly is a painful disease, that's for sure. I'm pretty good on getting my shots, but I'm pretty sure I'd be able to tell if I did.

Yeah, Nuvaring has been linked to breast, ovarian, and cervical cancer.

I had migraines long before I had the pill, so I'm not worried so much about that.  I also have suspected PCOS, so if I come off the pill I have symptoms of that, which in my opinion can be worse.

  • Well it is good to know how involed you girls are on your b/c methods and keeping your health in check :) Good to see!

Well I hope NR works for me, I just got my prescription, but just FYI to those who buy it (it is $$-compared to others!) There is a coupon online that brought mine down from $42 to $27 :) So just fyi. I've got to take progesterone first before NR so I can even have a period to start this stuff with so hopefully it helps!

Thanks for everyones input!!! It helped major!

  • Just throwing in my two cents -

I have migraines also, and if they are hormone related, there is a hormone patch specifically for migraines that your gyno can prescribe.  I've used it in the past, and it works great.

I had NR for 5 years...it was fantastic.  The only downside was that I gained about a cup size and a half and had to buy new bras.  Now I'm on Implanon, and I love the "leave it and forget it" that goes with that.  Good luck with the NR!

  • Beware of Nuva Ring. I was on it for 2 years and it totally messed up my hormones. Google "Nuva ring-Pain during sex" and read everything people have posted about it. I guess it doesn't happen to some people, bc I have friends that are on it too. But for me, it raised my natural yeast levels in my body and caused terrible burning and pain during sex. (which lasted a full year because my OBGYN apparently had no idea what was wrong - I finally went to a holistic DR. and he put me on an antifungal and I had to do enemas, hoh yay.) Luckily it is all cleared up now and sex doesn't hurt, but I would wish this onto no one, it is psychologically and physically straining on a marriage.

I am also a migraine sufferer and the only thing NR did is make my migraines be on a schedule. Ya, the periods aren't that bad, and cramping isn't bad, but your boobs will become ginormous and for me that was a big problem. I gained about 20 pounds and couldn't keep it off until I finally QUIT the Nuva Ring.

Now, my husband and I practice NFP, I keep track of my cycles, figure out my fertile days, and we use condoms on those days or just have foreplay those days. It is easy but you have to PAY ATTENTION to your body.

  • Depo's high level of hormones all at once can cause osteoporosis in women, despite how healthy they are.  It's best to avoid if possible.

NR caused me a lot of issues, such as uncontrollable diarrhea, and the start of getting yeast infections which had NEVER been a problem before NR.

I was on Trinessa and I got the worst migraines of my entire life.  I had never had a problem with migraines until this particular BC, and they were debilitating.

I finally got the Paragard IUD (copper, no hormones) and I love it.  I know with your endometreosis a BC with no hormones isn't an option, so I suggest inquiring about Mirena.

Where there is love, there is life.-Ghandi
