Fish Sauce

Is there a substitute/replacement for fish sauce? I can't stand the smell and it makes me gag every time.  We make a lot of Asian foods but tend to shy away from those using fish sauce.

I would just skip it if you hate it that much. You may need a little saltiness, so a splash of soy to taste might be necessary, but I would substitute ounce for ounce, as it could be overwhelming.

Have you tried using it? I don't like the smell when I smell it in the bottle, but I never notice it in a recipe when I cook since most recipes don't require a lot of it. It adds a good flavor to the dish that I haven't found in substitutes.

I know that doesn't answer your question, but I just wanted to make that comment.

I totally understand. I can't stand it either and for me the taste is really strong. I substitute it with soy sauce and when I eat Thai I ask them to leave it out.

I don't feel like spending that much for an ingredient that I dont really need... I just leave it out. food always comes out great without it! mind you i don't like my food that salty.
