We bought the Nest thermostat this past winter. We initially bought it so we could temperature control from our iPhones and online. H and I travel a lot for work and this was a great option for us, I mean seriously? Turn on the heat from the airport, that is awesome. Since then we have saved a lot of money by being able to set the thermostat to away or even off while we travel or aren't home. I think that we would benefit from this even more if we were home more often, since it is a learning thermostat. The thermostat learns your habits, and after a few days of you guys adjusting the temperature, the thermostat will do it automatically.
I think that it is a little bit of an investment but there are a lot of benefits that go with it.
