Small Yard.

Our yard is very small, and about to get smaller. We live in an area that only has street parking, and most of the neighbors have put garages or carports in thier backyards. We are planning on putting a carport or parking pad, but are trying to figure out how to keep our yard a space that we like...and that will be an asset to selling later. We have a renter downstairs, so we need to keep access easy to the parking for both the renter and us. We were thinking of putting decking in and some large shrubs/benches etc and creating a seating area with the little bit of yard that wont be used for parking. Currently theres a cement slab and grass but there will only be about 6sqft of grass down a long narrow strip once the parking goes in and would not leave enough area to bother putting a seating area in...so my question is:

Are we ok to just get rid of the grass completely and have a fabulous seating area with plants around it, or would you prefer to have the grass even though its awkward and skinny if you were looking at houses to buy?

Re: Small Yard.

  • take out the grass and make it usable!  My hubs and I had a 5x6 patch of grass in the back of our house next to the concrete slab that was supposed to be our patio and "yard".  After a year we ripped it all up and put in pavers and pea gravel to make it actually usable and we have zero regrets! ...even in a new home development.  Who want's to mow a 24 sq. ft piece of grass - let alone 6 sq ft?!  I say make it as functional as possible and you'll get the most out of your investment!

  • I think ppl looking in that area expect that the homes will have small yards. But, as a dog owner, I'd still like a little grass for my dog to run out at night to pee on. If you could get creative with gravel, grass, patio and pavers that could be cool.
  • I think I'd just take the grass out.  Hard to say without photos, but it sounds like it would just look out of place if it is SO small.  Personally, I'd rather just water a bunch of awesome plants than to have to worry about mowing such a small patch of grass & watering it if the weather is dry.

Yep, bye-bye grass. Make a patio, and surround it with interesting plants that will provide beauty, shade, and privacy without overpowering a small space.

It sounds just like my neighborhood, and you can do amazing things in a tiny backyard.

This is how I feel too, but I also think 6 sqft of grass is a little ridiculous... you wouldn't be mowing at that point, you could just take the shears to it  lol

If you don't have a dog, and it's fairly common in your neighborhood to have a back "yard" set up this way, I would say get rid of that grass!  You could make it functional and beautiful with different plants and seating :)

  • Thanks ladies, we are still a ways away from actually doing anything, but trying to figure out a design before we start sinking money into it!
  • Get rid of the grass! I'd much rather have usable space, some nice container gardens and maybe a small flower bed or two.

We don't have a lawn right now, and I don't miss it at all (even with 3 kids!).
