New to running. Foot & knee pain help

Hello. I started the c25k program a week ago and am using the treadmill due to it being so hot outside. I went to a specialty shoe store and was told I have high arches and given some shoes they said are good for my feet. Well the last two times I've done the walk/jog intervals my feet have hurt/burned and my knees hurt. Feet feel better right away but knees still hurt the next day and immediately the next time a jog interval came up. I'm new to running and want to keep it up but the pain is discouraging. Any advice on what can be causing it or what to do about it?

  • Bring your shoes back and get refitted by another person. Sometimes people make mistakes because they are human and go with their instincts, which aren't always right for you.
  • Have you tried running in another pair of shoes? If not, you might try one session in another pair to see if it's the shoes or something else. If it's something else, I would suggest getting checked out by a doctor. If it's the shoes, then definitely take them back and get refitted.

I also get sore whenever I start running again after taking a prolonged break. It takes a while before my joints get used to it again. So if you haven't had any physical activity in a while, it could also be your body getting used to the impact and movement too... though again, double check with a doctor.

  • Thanks for the suggestions. I used different shoes a few times before i got fitted and also used these shoes a few times before the discomfort started. I'll try my other shoes again next time and see what happens. I hope it can be resolved with the right shoes. Prior to starting this program I had not recently been working out at all so maybe it is my joints etc getting used to it. How long should it take for my body to get used to it if that's the case?

  • When I started the couch to 5K program, my knees hurt, too.  I don't know what to tell you about your feet hurting...sorry about that.  But, I think you have to build up your quads before your knees will stop hurting.  That's what I had to do - now I don't have any knee trouble when I run and I've been running for 3 years. Strengthen your quadriceps and that'll put some of the pressure off your knees.  Try doing lunges or squats - yoga will help strengthen your legs a lot, too!  Hope that helps!
