What breed?

I adopted my dog from the pound when he was 6 weeks old. At that time he was listed as a chow / German shepherd but they "didn't really know". The more I googled the more I thought he was mostly pit. Then his ears started going up. And up. And up. He now has giant, disproportionate ears that are definitely not pit. At 6 months he is almost 50 lbs. Another quirky trait is that he howls all the time. He howls more than he barks, and most people I talk to say they haven't seen a dog that howls like him. Any thoughts? I get asked what he is ALL the time and I have no idea what to tell anyone.

Here is Oswald today, at 6 and a half months old.

Re: What breed?

  • His ears are hilarious! But I can't think of any breed that has ears that start out floppy and become upright, without being taped, so I can't help you there.

He could easily have pit in him...I could see it, around the eyes and brow. He's about the right size, too. I'll bet he winds up somewhere around 70 pounds once he's full grown.

    Whatever he is, he's precious!

  • He's so cute!

He looks like a giant rat terrier to me... But I'm not sure if even their ears get proportionately that large :/

  • Something shepard is my guess with the ears.:)

He might have some hound in him also -- or maybe even some husky --- a small touch of it --- along with pit or maybe boxer.
  • ::lurking:: I'm going to go with staffordshire terrier with pharaoh hound.  No matter what, those ears are awesome!

This is my guess as well. A pharaoh hound is the only dog I know of with ears like that.

  • I have NO clue but he's so adorable! His face is so expressive!
  • maybe some sort of basenji with the howling and the ears?

  • I actually see a lot of dogs that look yours on craigslist quite often.  They're usually described as a terrier mix.  Love the ears!

  • I really have no clue on the breed, but I could maybe see Pit and German Shepherd.  And like all PPs Who cares I love the ears!  When people ask he is a mixed breed, and you don't know.  If you really want to know they do have dna tests now that can give you exact percentages of all breeds that are involved.

  • Um German Shepherds' ears start out floppy and end up upright without being taped.

DH said, those are German Shepherd ears... he had 3 growing up...

But oh my god did we laugh!!!! (Up, up, up!) I'm in tears :)

  • So Adorable! AndI love the name. German Shepherds have ears like that and they are know for "Talking," alot. The range of different noises a GSD can make is amazing!

I know you have replied in the other post, but I am just going to reiterate it in here so any lurkers may see.

Those tests are a load of crap and a waste of money.  I know papered dogs that have come back with totally wrong results.
