What I don't understand....
is why the same supervisor of elections is winning when we have such "issues"here? Wouldn't a change be good?
why Earl K. Wood who is like 100 years old and collecting pension and a salary for the same position still wins? His opponent actualy came to our door one night!
This is Orange Co. of course but I just don't get it!!!!
Re: What I don't understand....
I was wondering the same thing.?
Hey Jen - definitely not trying to be rude, but Earl Wood is the tax collector for Orange County. Bill Cowels is the Supervisor of Elections.
I do agree that Orange County has some serious issues with its voting procedures. They should have known no one in the UCF district had voted yet! Plus the Avalon Park thing was a little ridiculous as well. Does anyone know how all that works with drawing up the precincts?
At least it wasn't another 2000 debacle.
I can tell you exactly how that works because I work for Bill Cowles and am the person that works with polling places. The thing with UCF is this, over 2,000 people registered at the very last minute. The deadline to register to vote for the General Election was October 6th, 29 days prior to an election. If we want to add new precincts it must go through approval by the Board of County Commissioners and you need at least 4-6 weeks to get something on the agenda. And then comes the trouble of finding a polling place. There are already 2 at the Arena and as a matter of fact they tried to kick us out at the very last minute stating that there was no room for us. We mail Sample Ballots out 4-6 weeks before and Election to give the voters fair notice of where their polling place is (not that people read it, but we still do it.) Not only would you have to find a polling place we would also need to hire the workers and have enough voting equipment. Elections do not happen overnight and we had no way to predict that this one precinct would over double in size so close to an election. The major issue for the lines at UCF is that most of these people in line were not the voters that had all of their information correct, those voters got processed quickly. The problem was all the voters that waited until YESTERDAY to change addresses, and when they do that we need to verify that they did not already vote in another county. Because, despite what the media and public believe our goal is fair, accurate and legal elections. We put our lives into making sure that things run smoothly. I worked over 101 hours in the last 9 days and resent the statement that things are wrong with the voting process. There are statutes that we must follow that even we think are stupid and redundant but, we have to follow the letter of the law. Remember that the people that write the laws are the people that get voted into office with these laws.
I'm not really sure what was so ridiculous at Avalon Park? I know there were long lines, but what else was the issue. Please let me know so I can research and call those pollworkers to find out what happened.
Sorry if I'm being snarky, I worked 22 hours yesterday and got 5 hours of sleep last night, back at work today already. I've been gone from the Nest for the last few months due to working a lot for the election so most newbies probably don't know me. I hope I explained it without being rude and I really would answer any other questions because I hate when misinformation gets spread due to the media and others making assumptions. I love what I do and don't mind taking the time if there's anyone that wants to understand the process more. Glad to be back online, life is almost back to normal for me, can't wait to see my son tonight.
I did not mix them up....I was talking about two different things. Bill Cowles AND Earl K Wood. Two different races.
And yes.... agree on Avalon and UCF. We vote in an old fashioned way in my opinion. There were many places to vote but most locations only had one scanner. Why not more?
The voting could just be done better is all I am saying.
And how exactly can it be done better without spending a whole lot of money and still making something easy enough for the elderly to understand? ?It was done electronically in 2004 and we saw how that turned out. ?People didn't understand it. ?What do you suggest?
Sorry, I am just sick of people complaining about EVERYTHING. ?4 years ago, everyone complained about the "new" voting system....that is was too complicated. ?Now people are complaining that the "new" voting system is out of date ?and "old fashioned". ?You can't have it both ways!
Frankly, I thought this system was a little out of date, but it was short....sweet....and to the point. ?There was a paper trail just in case and it was hard for even the dumbest of dumb to understand.?
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Every state does it differently. : )
I understand everyone is entitled to their own opinion....but if you can't back up that opinion (which seems to be the going thing on this board lately) then how much of an opinion could it be.
I was just asking to see how you (or anyone else) thought it would be better and you have no suggestions. ?Everyone just like to *** and have their "opinions" but no one can back them up. ?It's funny to me.?
Honestly, I don't want to get into the details because of the way people react on this board.
If you didn't want to get into the "details" then you never should have started. ??
I didn't realize that I needed to get into details or come up with a plan myself. I dont work in elections and wouldn't have that answer without doing some more research, now would I? I didn't realize that if I posted my thoughts on this board (which is the intention of the site) that I should have to answer all of the political problems that FL or this Nation has. Sorry.
It is clear why only few people post here anymore.
AGREED! Frankly this board is way different with a bunch of clicks.
I don't see why people have to get rude & nasty about stuff! Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and statements without having to explain themselves to anyone.
Some like Obama, Some like McCain and people are willing to loose friendships over it and that is just sad!
Right, but if no one can explain why they like one or the other (or dislike) how can you really make an informed decision. ?
For a very long time I was trying to get just ONE person on here to explain why they liked Obama and what good they thought would come out of him winning the election. ?Not one person could (or did) explain their views. ?Just seems to me like it was "cool" to vote for him and that's what everyone followed.
I agree everyone has the right to their own opinions, but what good are posting those on a message board if you can't discuss them and back them up? ?You all keep talking about "that's why people don't post here". ?I don't understand how anyone who disagrees with YOUR view can't ask questions but you can "state" what you feel all you want. ?The point of a message board is to have discussions....yet if it's a serious topic, no one will "discuss" anything. ?They just say, "that's my opinion". ?Why state it if you won't (or can't) discuss it?!? ?Can't we all be grown ups and discuss.....not just say, "because" and run away??
Mrs Recio- You said it very well. : )
What are you asking anyone to explain? Candi, I think that you and I are probably opposites, in terms of our political beliefs. I wish I had time to explain more to you and really get in to a meaty debate about it, but I am a sahm. Ava takes up all my time now that she's mobile and in to everything.
If you want to think that I only voted for him because it was the cool thing to do, so be it.
I live in Avalon Park and voted here, so did my husband and daughter. Here are our experiences:
I arrived at 6a and was #37 in line. We counted; we were bored. I wasn't able to get in the door until 7:30. Due to the line, I was held there for more than 10 minutes. In that 10 minutes, I stood at the door next to the scanner. There were 7-8? voting booths and 2 tables. It wasn't the voting that was the issue, it was the scanner. First, there was one scanner for 8 booths, plus the tables. Every single person in front of me had a scanning issue. Misfeeds that obviously weren't. Misvotes that obviously weren't. The woman in front of me had 9 errors before hers was finally accepted. Mine went through without a hitch and I'm sure that's out of pure luck. Even being #37 in line, I didn't walk out of there until 7:54. There's no way it should have taken 55 minutes for 37 people to vote, but it did.
My husband voted during his lunch break. He stood in line for 3.5 hours. The problem was still the scanner. By then, the poll workers had begun giving everyone the option of dropping their ballot in a lockbox. My husband chose this option, but many didn't. He walked past more than 40 people standing in line for the scanner, all of them in line long before he got there. The one woman said she arrived at 10a. My husband walked out of there just after 2:30p. It took her 4.5 hours to get through the line, but over an hour of that was waiting for the scanner.
My daughter voted after school. I dropped her at 5:15p with about 200 people in front of her. By this time, almost everyone was choosing the lockbox. She called me just after 7p. She took her father's advice and dropped her ballot. She also didn't worry about waiting for a booth; apparently, many didn't. She said that 10-15 people at a time started writing against the walls. It seems as though "drop in lockbox" and "write against the walls" was the key to getting in and out in about 2 hours.
I certainly can't speak for others, but I can say that voting was beyond tedious. Eight booths for the precinct isn't enough and one scanner is ludicrous. It wasn't only that it was a banner year. Voting two years ago in a non-presidential year was almost as bad.
LOL at the people only voting for Obama because it's "cool" statement!
Again it's a free country and we don't have to explain ourselves why we voted for Obama and get into a debate with anyone!
It's over, it's done and not to be rude but now it's time to deal with it!
People need to stop being so negative and MCCain wasn't the best option in alot of peopls eyes despite it being right in yours! Just bc you like someone doesn't mean everyone will.
It's no about being cool it's about who we believe in, and who will do a better job.
So Stop whining that everyone voted for Obama and he won. He's your new president, if you don't like it move to another country please!
I asked on here a long time ago what it was that people liked about Obama. ?I also asked how anyone thought he was going to be able to do everything he intended when we are in such a bad way financially in this country right now. ?Not one person could answer me. ?What I really wanted to know (pre-election) was what what about Obama all of his supporters liked. ?I mean, I have been republican all my life and what he was saying sounded to me like bad things when you really thought about them so I wanted someone who supported him to explain to me why his ideas weren't bad. ?No one could (or did) do that.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but when people can't (or won't) back up that opinion with logical reasoning, it doesn't seem like they really have an opinion of their own. ?Just seems like they are following the "band wagon". ?Unfortunately, that's what I feel happened in this election since it was almost impossible to speak to someone one on one who could logically make an argument for the man.?

Wow...way to be hostile. ?Again, (for probably the 8th time this thread) everyone has a right to their opinion. ?A long time ago I wanted to hear why you all had that opinion because I was interested....not for any other reason. ?There was not one person on here that could simply tell me about their views on Obama. ?NOT ONE. ?This is a message board and for as much as you all were all about him, I thought maybe someone could help me better understand some things he stood for but alas, no one could. ?So why am I supposed to believe that anybody made an informed decision about this election if no one could tell me about it.
I feel the way I do, and you feel the way you do. ?I am an American and support this country.....I may not agree with many things that Obama stands for, but I support this country and will continue to do so.
I'm not mad, just don't see why people are getting all heated and stomping their feet around over the fact that he got elected when it's all said & over with. The Majority of America Voted for him and he won.
As for why some people voted for Obama and didn't explain well 1. I never saw that thread but 2. it's a little hard to get into a political debate over a message board and I don't think you should assume that just bc someone didn't answer your questions that anyone made an "uninformed decision."
If you would like to sit down over lunch and discuss all the reasons I voted for Obama I would be glad to explain because I am a proud supporter!
Let me step in here and say that this board went through some tumultuous times recently, and I know that I for one shied away from topics that were potentially controversial for a while there. It just wasn't worth it to me to risk being attacked by trolls.
