Need an idea

We've been invited to dinner at someone's new home.  It's not a housewarming just getting some people together- it's DH's hs friends and the first time they've all lived in the same town since college.  They said we didn't need to bring anything, but let them know if we wanted to.  Which of course means I should take something (at least in my mind).  I was going to do a cheesecake, but someone is already bringing cookies and brownies.

There will be 4ish couples and a half dozen kids.  I have no idea what type of dinner they were thinking, but thought it's probably casual since there will be so many kids.

Now onto the needed idea- what should I take?  I was thinking maybe mac and cheese, but worry it's not "fancy."  I do add bacon and panko, but it's still mac and cheese KWIM?  I just thought it would be kid friendly too.

ETA: DH is talking to his friend to get a feel for things, but just looking for some thoughts too.

Re: Need an idea

  • Hmmm.... Maybe fresh fruit platter or bowl?  Can make it "fancy" by adding fresh figs, berries etc.  I'm sure that would be really appreciated...even though it is simple.  I also saw a cute thing on-line where they hollowed out a watermelon to look like a sail boat - but I can't find it right now.

    :)

  • That's not bad, but I hate fruit ;)  I know I'm probably the only one, but oh well.  My other thought was a green salad, but then worry it makes the hostess worry about bowls or salad dressing (even though I'll bring some).
  • Oh OK - I think a green salad would be nice anyways...

    :)

  • A green salad is a good option, and you can always dress it up with different cheeses, greens, or fruit (even though you did say that you hate it). Spinach, feta, and blueberries is a personal favorite.

Could you bring an appetizer? Crostini with bruschetta or an artichoke-spinach dip is always a crowd pleaser. Plus they're simple to transport!

  • What about something like this?  I think it does that humble yet elegant thing really well and would work for almost any style gathering.  If you arrive and discover they really didn't need anything, you could give it to the hostess as a gift to enjoy the next day.

I think this is perfect.  And the recipe looks so delicious I think I will steal it and make it sometime in the near future.  YUM!!!

  • I like that Tar, but it's kind of desserty no?  Dessert is covered.

Duh, yes.  Reading comprehension fail.  Sorry.

I think I vote for fancy mac and cheese.  Or did your husband find out anything about the dinner?

  • does it have to be food or could you bring a bottle or two of wine?

Otherwise I would ask her if she has any ideas for you, maybe she's decided on the menu now.

  • DH talked to the guy and it's going to be a casual BBQ (which is sort of what I figured with 8 kids).  The mac and cheese will be perfect so that's what I'm taking.  Since it's the first time we're going to the new home I have a little plate and a bottle of wine for gifts too.
