What to do about sudden resource guarding?

Our 4 year old rottie is seriously the sweetest dog. He is awesome with the kids and our younger dog that we adopted a few months ago. Lately though he has started growling at our other dog when there is food or a bone down (he actually doesn't even like bones he just doesn't want the other one to have it). Tonight he growled at my husband for the first time ever when my husband went to pick the bone off the floor.

For now, I am feeding them seperate and not allowing them to have bones unless they are in their own areas. Which kind of blows because the puppy is only 6 months and really needs something to chew on all the time. Is there anything else I can do?

Re: What to do about sudden resource guarding?

  • Resource guarding is normal behavior between dogs. It's not normal when the dog resource guards from a human, I don't think.

I have had one foster get nasty with me over a marrow bone. I did trade up and gave him something else, took the bone and threw it in the garbage. Never again did he get one.

He never had problems with other things and me, so I took it to be the bone thing.

My dog resource guards with other dogs- any toys and high value treats are given in separate rooms or crates.  That's just how it's done here, it can be a pain, but it will keep everyone safe. You don't want your dogs to get into a fight and the kids get caught in the middle over something that is easy enough to prevent. GL!!
