Doodle owners: Grooming question

We have a one year old goldendoodle, Bentley. His coat has been easy to maintain up until recently. With the summer months, he is swimming and getting wet a lot and he has so many matts in his fur, I can't keep up with them. At first, I could work them out pretty easy, but now they are everywhere.  Should I take him for a summer cut and have him shaved? Or have the groomer try to work them out? I love his long fur but I can't imagine he's comfortable.

Re: Doodle owners: Grooming question

  • It's never a good idea to shave a dog. They stay cooler with the longer hair, although I realize that sounds counter-intuitive. Mats are painful, too, of course, but if the groomer can get them out, I'd go that route.

Um....a show poodle's groom involves shaving half of them.  Unfortunately, with mixed breeds, it's a guess as to how the fur will grow back.  From the picture, I'd guess the fur is more golden retriever-like than poodle-like.

Id go to a reputable groomer and ask their opinion.   I'm going to guess once you figure how what to do with his fur for now, you will need to brush him daily to keep the mats down.

  • I am a groomer and you should absolutely have the dog shaved. It is pure torture for the dog and virtually impossible to get mats out of a dog with hair like that without making the skin bleed from all the brushing, pulling etc... And it will take hours. It doesn't have to be down to the skin, just say short and even all over and your groomer should know what you are talking about. It will look drastically different, but it's hair and it grows back. I personally won't groom a dog that is matted unless the customer lets me shave it. It isn't fair for the dog.

  • We live in NOLA and are dog sitting a golden retriever-poddle mix dog right now.

Her owners shave her at the beginning of every summer. They keep it trimmed short through the rest of the summer. Then grows it out around September.
