Wanting to Move

hey ladies!

Me and Husband are planning on moving after I graduate in May. We want to be closer to our families. Right now we are 3 1/2 - 4 hours away. We want to move closer so we can visit easier and when we have children we want them to be able to spend time with their grandparents.

We have way too many options right now thought. Charlestion WV, Winston Salem, NC, Bristol TN, and Blacksburg/ Roanoke VA.  There's no way  DH should apply for jobs in all these places because of the cost of travel these days. Any advice on how to narrow our choices down to two places?  How can you tell if an area is a "safe" area?

Thanks ladies!

Re: Wanting to Move

  • Which location would get you closest to your families? I think that's the first way I would narrow my options a bit. You could also go on the local boards on TN or TK and ask the people living there about the areas.

I'm originally from Greensboro, which is very close to Winston Salem. There are lots of nice parts of Winston and there is plenty to do there. You're also really close (like an hour) from the mountains, which always makes for a fun trip.

Blacksburg, VA is a college town, so I'm not sure if as a young married couple you'd want to live there. I'm not sure if there are "nice" parts of Roanoke, but the parts that we've driven through don't seem to be the nicest.

I love Roanoke. Moving from Richmond to Roanoke, I find it very safe. I love the down town and feel safe at all times. Granted there are some not so safe parts but I would be willing to vouch for Roanoke (and I am sure NieceJeff would vouch for Roanoke). There are always tons of festivals and events to go to. You are so close to the mountains.

I agree w/Ash. I was born in Roanoke and love it here. There are a few areas that don't look very nice, but I have never felt unsafe here. There is so many festivals her and you really are close to everything. You have the mountains just a few minutes from here, there is the lake less than an hour away. There are some big city type things around here, but its still small enough to not feel like you are crammed in a little place. I would highly recommend this area to anyone!

Blacksburg is a nice town, but it is the typical college town. Again, I have been there a ton of times and have never felt unsafe (even after the April 16 shooting that happened there, never did I feel like I had to worry about my safety) If you have any questions about the Roanoke area, please feel free to ask!

  • I've moved a bunch, but not to the locations that you're considering.  My first stop is usually to the local newspapers, and then to look up general stats for the city.  Check out http://www.city-data.com/.  They've got crime stats there usually by zip code.

To figure out cost of living comparisons: http://cgi.money.cnn.com/tools/costofliving/costofliving.html.  It gives a nice breakdown not just of salary comparisons, but also how much more/less you'd pay for groceries, transportation, etc compared to another location.
