Hormonal acne

Okay so I have had these congested pores on my chin for a few years now.  I've seen a dermatologist.  I have had facials (I actually just had this CRAZY facial in Atlantic City on 4th of July) and nothing is helping. Even when I get extractions, the pores become immediately congested again.

Anytime I try to treat them w salicylic acid or the like, the rest of my chin dries out like crazy.  And I mean it's really flaky, and looks & feels chapped.

What else can I be doing? I have a Clarisonic.  I use good quality products.  I don't know what else to do.

Re: Hormonal acne

  • What did your derm say? Have you tried Retin-A? That is the only thing that really helps my hormonal acne. It's still there, but way better.

  • I hear you. I can get a facial and come home and still get gunk out of my pores!!!  I was thinking about getting a Clairsonic, thinking that would help but now with your post, I am re-evaluating.

You could also get Rx for Spironolactone. I was on that Rx for a few years while getting treated for something else and my skin was flawless, but had to take steroids with it, to get my period regular, after my conditions and hormons leveled, I was tapered off. I like that I am not on medication, but my skin doesn't look as awesome as it used to be.

  • I have the exact same problem you do and I've tried numerous products, including Retain-A.  I use that at night along with a mosturizer, but in the mornings I just started using the Clinque Acne Solutions 3-step kit.  So far I'm really loving the results as the acne on my jaw line, chest & neck has almost disappeared.  I bought the starter kit at Macy's for $34 to try it out before I commit/spend more on the normal size bottles.  But I love it so I will be back to buy the regular bottles.  I was even using charcoal soap to help with the pore clogging and that wasn't helping.  It's very frustrating!   GL!

That's what my derm put me on... and it didn't do anything for me.  We also tried Aczone.  He didn't want to put me on Retin-A though.  I'm not oily at all... I just have congested pores only on my chin.  And in the grand scheme of things, it's not a big deal, but it drives me bananas.

  • My clarisonic broke and my face cleared up.  Weird, but worth a shot?

  • I steam my face with a steam machine 1-2x per week and use a mask.  You can buy a Homedics steamer for around $20.

  • Have you tried oil cleansers? I use a high-SPF sunscreen every morning, and the only thing that breaks it down in the evening (and keeps it from clogging my pores) is using an oil-based cleanser prior to cleansing with my Clarisonic. I like Dermalogica's Precleanse and one from Shiseido. I really think double-cleansing (once with an oil to remove sunscreen, makeup, etc. and once with a gentle cleanser formulated for your skin type) is the way to go.

  • I do use an oil cleanse.  I used Pre-Cleanse for a while, but then I switched to Boscia's Makeup Breakup Oil.  It's a bit less expensive ($26 as opposed to $34), and the bottle is slightly bigger, so I wanted to try it.  I actually think it breaks down makeup better than Pre Cleanse does.

I know it's not products that's breaking me out.  And my Clarisonic doesn't make me breakout more or less... and I don't use it every day anyway.  I'm going to try to use it every day for a month and see if that helps those breakouts.  I'm just at a loss at this point.  Everything I try doesn't do a darn thing.

  • Have you ever tried a spot treatment cream?  I use one with benzoyl peroxide and just as needed.  If I get breakouts I only use it on the breakout that way it doesn't dry out the rest of my skin but usually within a day or over night the break out is gone.
