Lab, strange behavior

Hello.. I am going to jump right in.

My 16 month old lab who had a strange issue this morning while eating. If I had not been in the kitchen at the same time I would never have known anything happened.

So while she was eating she backed away from her bowl and started to like cower and lay down. I called her over and she was trembling, not a lot, I noticed because I was holding her. She was breathing, wasn't choking, didn't cough. She let me hold her and pet her and then she stopped and went back to eating. The entire day she has been perfectly fine. Soo I have no idea what that was about! I of course was nervous and will watch her to see if it happens again and will see a vet if it does. I know its strange wondering if anyone has any insight?

 TIA

Re: Lab, strange behavior

  • I probably won't be too much help but my pup does similar weird things. I have a 16 month old lab as well and he has major anxiety issues. Most of the time it's caused by pretty much anything that moves air around: the house fan, the heater/air conditioner. For some reason he absolutely hates the sound. My best guess would be that she heard or smelled something that concerned her. It happens fairly regularly with Morgan and he will freak out for a bit and then get over it an act like nothing happened.

Our options are to either just let him work through these episodes by distracting him or our vet said we could put him on anxiety meds. As of yet, we've decided against medicating him.

I also maintain that dogs can sense ghosts and it freaks them out. =)

  • It sounds like anxiety to me. I'd definitely mention it to your vet!

  • This does seem like an anxiety response. Maybe she smelled or heard something that spooked her. Dogs are much more sensitive to that sort of stimuli than we are. I'd watch her, and if you think you should bring it up to the vet, go ahead.

  • My one dog used to cry out in pain (or what I thought was pain) while she was eating and then run away from her food. The vet told me it was possible she was getting a gas bubble or a cramp while she was eating. Maybe that's what is happening to your dog?

When it happened I would put my hands on her abdomen and rub or pat gently (she would always run to me with her tail between her leg, wimpering).

It hasn't happened in a looong time now and she has since "learned" how to burp (very loudly! LOL) when she is eating or is done eating. I do think it was gas or some sort of belly pain that was causing the weird behavior associated with eating.

  • She may have been spooked of something! I don't want to think about a ghost!! It was so sad,but she has been fine every since so I think it is like you ladies said. Thanks so much. I will just keep a watch on her.
