I'm not new to renting, however, I have never had the option to make changes to my rental. My landlord has told me I can do whatever I want in the two bedrooms of the house because he did not do them for me. If I choose to do this, he will not take off our rent (I can't really complain about that, the house is cheap as it is). My question is, how much should I put into the house? I'd LOVE to do the floors because they're still the bare wood that was used to build them, I just don't think I can justify spending that kind of money on something I'm not going to get a return on. On the other hand, I don't want to look around and see purple walls and nasty floors every day. Any suggestions?

Are you talking about the subfloor? Is it even legal for a rental to not have proper flooring? You might want to check your state's landlord-tenant laws. If it's bare subfloor, first I wouldn't have considered that type of place, but if I did, I'd be requiring the landlord to put in proper flooring.
If you're not talking about subflooring, ditto pp.
