Does anyone use Benjamin Moore paints?
I've always been the kind of painter who just goes to Lowes or Homedepot and searches for a swatch thats close enough to what I was thinking. Now, however, we are building a house and really want to spend time selecting the paint colors we like and doing various swatches around the house.
As I'm collecting my inspirations, I find that a lot of colors I love are Benjamin Moore. Is anyone familiar with the price range or quality of these paints? I've heard the big box stores can match the colors, but I wonder how true they really are? I'd love any advice or suggestions...thanks!!
Re: Does anyone use Benjamin Moore paints?
They are definitely more expensive. I have used Valspar, BM and Behr. BM is my favorite, Valspar is pretty good too and I wouldn't use Behr again.
H's uncle is a painter/contractor so he has an account with the BM dealer and we got like 15% off. So maybe ask around for a name you can use?
BM is very expensive when it's not on sale. ($45-$50/gal). I know SW has regular sales, but I can't speak to BM sales.
As for preference, paint is just like cars or peanut butter: everybody has a passionate opinion, sometimes personal, sometimes logical, sometimes no telling. We move a lot, so I've done lots of painting and not every town we've lived in has had a full selection of stores. I've used SW, Behr's paint and primer in one, and Valspar's paint and primer in one; I liked them all equally well. I buy whatever's on sale or easiest to get.
As for matching, yes, it should appear identical to the average eye. In reality, each brand's base will be slightly different from the next: a drop more blue or red, etc. That minute variation won't be visible to the average homeowner.

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
I love BM, and it's the only interior paint I've used (I dappled in California Paint and didn't like the consistency). It's pricier, but what you see is what you get, and in the long term it holds up really well.
I recently did my exterior with Behr, color matched to a BM paint ( a dark blue from the historical color line) It had more to do with store times than anything - Home Depot was open when I needed it to be, the specialty paint store wasn't. It's a decent match, but is lacking the grey depth of the BM color that I wanted. If I ever get the energy to paint my house again, I'll use BM. I don't really have a problem with the quality and usability of Behr though, so if you're not super color sensitive, then I'de say it's not a huge deal.

I used Behr paint with primer from Home Depot. The cool thing is they can color match so if you want to use a less expensive paint and they don't have the same color, just give them a swatch of your preference and they will match it for you. Home Depot is especially good at coloring matching. I'm not sure about Lowes because I didn't have one close enough to shop at.
Good luck - happy painting!
I spent most of my summer painting houses inside and out last summer. My order of preference from most to least is
Sherwin Williams- My favorite line is Cashmere, but it doesn't cover as much surface area as other paint lines since it is a thicker paint. Be careful with what sheen you choose, I find that matte works the best for me since it has a bit of a sheen. Satin is too shiny for my tastes. Never buy their paint for full price since they seem to have a sale every couple of weeks. Shop their mistints if you don't have a specific color in mind.
BM- Hirshfields paint store carries BM paint near me- I like their store more than the SW stores. Their colors are much "classier" than SW, so I would get a color match. Love their Regal Select paint. Their eggshell is my favorite sheen. My Hirshfields store OCCASIONALLY will have a sale that knocks off a few bucks, nothing nearly as good as a Sherwin Williams 40% off sale (or buying from their mistints). High quality exterior paint, only needed one coat.
Behr- I found that their paint and primer in one was pretty nice. I painted a room from white to deep red just fine in one coat, but did two because I'm a perfectionist.
Valspar- I used this once about 3 years ago. I have never had the desire to give it another shot.
Keep in mind that everyone is going to have a different experience with different kinds of paint. Some people suck at painting, so they aren't going to be happy with a certain paint and will bad mouth it. Sometimes the weather comes in to play, bla bla bla.
