Homemade dog treat recipes calling for garlic!?!?!

I found a great website for tons of dyi doggie treat recipes and Im super excited to make some for my "furbaby" Charlie. One ingredient that was a constant struck me as odd was garlic. Now, I know garlic is very harmful and dont know if I want to risk it. Has anyone else used bullwrinkle.com's recipes and stuck to the garlic or did you trade it out for something else? ****Im open for suggestions on other sites too****

Re: Homemade dog treat recipes calling for garlic!?!?!

  • I just made homemade dog treats, and all it asked for was flour, peanut butter, chicken broth and oats. My dogs love them! I can give you the recipe if you'd like, as I'd also be a little nervous about putting garlic in, especially since you aren't sure how your dog will react.

  • there are many recipes out there without garlic but I also wanted to add that garlic in small quantities (and cooked helps too) is not harmful to your dog

  • I've used fresh garlic in treats before. Never cooked or salt or in large amounts though. :)

  • I personally don't use Garlic for anything for my dogs, b/c it is moreso toxic to cats than dogs. Onions are toxic to dogs and cause liver failure. Onions and garlic contain the same thing that causes liver failure, but the amount isn't large enough in garlic to harm dogs. I choose not to use it, b/c I would hate to give them too much or have it cause issues over time. I will say though, working in a vet's office has made me very paranoid, my dogs are rarely out of my site now.
  • I have seen garlic in dog recipes, I usually just leave it out.  But ditto the PP, fresh garlic won't hurt in small amounts.
  • I've read that garlic in very small amounts isn't harmful and dogs really like the flavor, makes them go crazy for the treat.

  • Onion is also fine in small amounts.  And its primary toxicity is actually blood related

  • I was mistaken in how it is bad for your dog. it kills their red blood cells, and while it may take a lot more of it to hurt your dog, why would you want to give it to them knowing your contributing to that? Do you know where that limit is? I'm guessing no, then how do you know how to keep them safe and not give too much?
  • I use it in our treats if it's called for in small amounts (1-2 cloves or up to 1 tsp per batch of 24 or so treats for our 100# poodle). I've heard that it helps keep the pests away (fleas, gnats, etc).

When in doubt, leave it out. There are a million other great recipes that don't call for garlic.

  • garlic powder is great to keep fleas away. I use garlic minimally
  • Its quite a lot.  Lets put it this way.  We are also at risk of the same poisoning from onions, but it takes such a large quantity that people don't get sick on it.

If I thought someone was at risk of putting to much in their food/ treats I would never have mentioned that, but because I know it is almost impossible to make something toxic and palatable I wasn't worried about mentioning it.  I am obviously not saying to test this theory, but a logical amount in a recipe should not cause a problem

I completely understand people not wanting to take that risk and I totally understand, but the OP's concern was about garlic in the recipe so I was making a point that the amount in the recipe will be just fine.

  • We use garlic/brewers yeast tablets for flea and tick prevention, but if you are concerned there are plenty of recipew without garlic in them.
