has anyone used a diaphragm?
or is that just super old school?
i can't do hormonal BC, so that's not an option, and i'm not interested in an IUD. currently DH and i are using just condoms and the super reliable pull-out method. he doesn't mind using condoms, but it's not so awesome to have to pause so he can "suit up" as someone called it in an earlier thread.
so, does anyone have any experience with using a diaphragm, or advice for other types of BC?
TIA
Re: has anyone used a diaphragm?
I've personally not used them, but the Dr I worked with used to fit women for them all the time. Just keep in mind that it has to be inserted a hour or so before sex and that you need to leave in place for awhile after. It's not really good if you are really spur of the moment people. You also have to be really comfortable with putting your fingers in your vagina to put that sucker in and fish it on out.
Also if you gain lose more than 10lbs you will have to be refitted for a new one.
Have you considered charting basal body temp and charting to help predict when you are going to ovulate and avoid "high risk" times. It called natural family planning. Many women use it the help get pregnant, but it can also be used to help prevent a pregnancy.
HTH
I would never recommend it just because it requires just as much "planning" as a condom does. And there is still stuff you have to think about. I don't know if it's a hormonal BC but have you tried the patch? I loved it and it was super easy to use.
I will say H and I also use the ever so perfect pull out method but we are also not 100% trying to prevent anything. Just if it happens it happens but we aren't trying to have a baby either.
Honestly I would just try to find something else.
Similiar to the diaphragm there's also the "sponge," although I don't know the difference. There are also spermicides, but I don't know much about those either. I obviously did not pay attention in health class.
yeah... i was charting my temps for a couple months, and my ovulation is pretty obvious, through temps and body signs, but hubby doesn't seem to trust it, so i quit tracking it. i have the myfertilityfriend.com app, and they had a tip on there that said when your body's not prepping for ovulation the cervical fluid is actually harmful to the sperm, maybe i can convince him to read some of the stuff on that site and have more faith in it.
i don't think i'd have a problem putting it in and taking it out. i used to use the nuva ring, and had to put that in and take it out, although, i know it's not the same thing.
the patch is definitely hormonal BC, so that's out. :-/
thanks for y'alls responses, ladies

This is what I was thinking, from what I've heard. Why is BC such a pain in the a$$? =
I was thinking about this too... but I would rather use condoms over a diaphragm because a condom can go on in seconds anytime during sex and taken off immediately after. A diaphragm has much more planning and after-ness.
I thought I was okay with the pill... I am really good at remembering to take it and it hasn't let me down as far as side effects... besides the low libido, which is huge, but other forms just don't seem like they are for...
Why is birth control such a pain in the A$$?
I can't wait until we are done with having babies and DH can get a vasectomy.
