Refridgerators

I've never purchased a refridgerator before, and I'm honestly a little overwhelmed.

Which style do you prefer -- side-by-side or the bottom drawer freezer? Frankly, I don't love either, but we want an icemaker so our options are limited.

Is there a particular brand you like? Our included appliances are GE, but I'm not overly concerned with matching them if I like something from another brand better.

Re: Refridgerators

  • I don't have it, but I dream of having the kind with a bottom drawer freezer. My BFF has that and it's amazing.

  • I much prefer the freezer on the bottom option. My ILs have the side by side and I feel like it can be really awkward for fitting in large trays or oversize items.

LOL - I dream of this kind, too:) I think we're old, Emmy!

  • we have the GE stainless that matches our Ryan appliances - it has the pull out drawer freezer on the bottom  I love the way it looks and i love the ice maker but I don't love the freezer.  Sometimes I feel like I am digging through a dumpster to find what I am looking for.  we got it at Home Depot.

I didn't like the side by sides b/c the space is so limited and narrow IMO.

  • We just bought a side by side. I'm not sure how we will like it yet since it isn't hooked up yet.  I felt limited too. I think I would rather have the freezer on bottom because that way you have more width space in the fridge. With the side by side I'm concerned that neither fridge nor freezer are very wide. My parents have this kind and it's a pain to put in a big frozen pizza, etc.  however with the bottom freezer I feel like that could get pretty disorganized and you're just piling things on top of each other.

The reason we went for side by side was cost. The other ones were way more expensive. We are completely renovating our kitchen and I can't see putting any more money into it at this point. If it was for sure our forever home I would have felt a little differently.

We went with frigidaire. I was overwhelmed too. Honestly the reason we went with frigidaire for all appliances is because the stainless steel of theirs looks nicer and doesn't pick up fingerprints as much as others. My parents have half frigidaire and half another brand and the frigidaire's is so much less of a hassle with fingerprints. But if I remember correctly you guys weren't doing stainless?

  • No, we are doing stainless now. I caved at the final appointment. I also like the Fridgedaire one b/c of the non-print finish, but DH is worried it won't match our other appliances. Heaven forbid we have one appliance in our kitchen with no fingerprints on it ;)

I was dead set against the drawer ones b/c we have one at work and it is completely disorganized in that drawer. However, the side-by-sides do have more limited space, and we don't shop very far in advance so we have much less stuff in our freezer than we do in our fridge. So, I guess I'm leaning twoard the drawer design.

HH Gregg had a Samsung one for under $2,000, but I've never used that brand for appliances (only electronics).

  • i am looking at french door/freezer on the bottom refrigerators for our kitchen. Our biggest limitation is size due to the layout. I like that style because it puts the food you are accessing most often at eye level and the width accommodates larger items more easily than a side by side.  Also- you can get an ice maker without freezer on the bottom or side by side... our fridge at the old house had one and was just a standard fridge.  Just no ice/water dispenser on the door. the filtered water was inside the fridge, and the ice just landed in a bin in the freezer.

We also have a GE with the bottom freezer and i feel this way too about digging to find what I want. Another thing I don't like about bottom freezer is DD has direct access to open and get a "treat". Where I think if it was above she obviously wouldn't. yet just means she would be opening fridge to get something.

We have stainless. I do like. Found a good cleaner and it has never been an issue to keep clean.

i use the method cleaner and it works great.  if Target is out of that, i use Weinman.  They both work great and are $5.

  • In our new house we have a french door with a freezer on the bottom.  In the old house we had a side by side.  I prefer the french door one in the new house with one issue.  I HATE the water / ice dispenser on the outside.  If I had my choice, I would get a french door with the water / ice on the inside.  I know Kitchen Aid makes a version like this.  Our fridge is a Whirlpool Gold and has four compartments in the freezer.  Two smaller sliding drawers over the larger bottom bins.  I am sure that if I had to buy one, I would be overwhelmed by the choices as well.  Good luck!
  • DH and I were roaming Sears a few weeks ago discussing the same thing.  We're going with the french door fridge with the freezer on the bottom.  I love the ones with 2 drawers that the smaller one can be switched to a fridge or freezer.  I think it would be awesome for flash freezing things on a tray.

I'm not overly concerned with digging through the freezer to find what we need, because 1.  they come with an internal drawer, so it's not like it is just one big bin.  and 2.  we have a separate larger freezer that will be in the garage that we keep the bulk of our frozen food in.

Me too, but the couple that we saw with that feature were $$$.

  • My mom has a Samsung french door and I am envious. They have had it for 4 or 5 years and have had no issues at all. My moms has a drawer in the freezer on top and then organizers in the large part.

I would never get a side-by-side again. The space is too tight. We are actually going old school and getting a top freezer in our remodel because of the limited space. Our side-by-side is huge in our tiny kitchen, lesson learned, measure fridge before buying!

  • I'm totally obsessed with getting a french door bottom freezer w/ice maker. We have a side-by-side right now and I hate how narrow it is.
  • I just bought a Whirpool SS 26.4 cu ft side by side in May. We LOVE it. We opted for a side by side due to having more freezer room. Our freezer has the ice machine on the door versus inside the actual freezer, this is a must.

Our house came with all GE SS appliances except for the fridge, the Whirpools finish on SS matches perfect.

As of right now the top fridges are either Samsung or Whirpool so I would stay within those brands.

    We're Married!! And I couldn't be happier!
  • When we moved, the new house came with a bottom freezer.  While I like the idea of it, the layout of the freezer is awful.  I feel like I can't get as much food into it as I did in our standard fridge in the old house.  It's difficult to explain, but the lower section of the drawer can only hold things so high because it closes under the top shelf in the freezer.

I don't have much food in the freezer right now and I feel like it's packed.  I'm not sure if they still have ice dispensers on the door for bottom freezers, but ours has the ice maker inside the freezer.  This also cuts down on my storage room.

If you find a bottom freezer fridge that you like, check out the layout.  If we replace it, I'd either be very careful of what the bottom drawer looks like or get a side-by-side.

  • FWIW, we have a second freezer, so freezer space isn't really an issue for us. which is why I don't mind the layout of the pull out freezers.
  • Love my bottom drawer freezer.  We have a single door, stainless steel LG and we are really happy with it.  It's really spacious and has a lot of shelving options.  We've had it for about 3 years now.

  • We have a garage fridge w/ a freezer too, so it's not like crazy concerning, but if we're spending all of this money I just want to make a smart choice, ya know?
  • We have a side by side at the new house and I'm already stressing about how I'll get large veggie trays and things in there for parties.

  • We have a side by side - when we moved our house did not have a fridge, so my parents gave us this one from their old kitchen.  I thought we would need to replace it right away because of how awful everyone told me side by sides were, but 5 years later we still have it and I really don't see what the big deal is. We host every holiday dinner and entertain frequently throughout the year, and I honestly can't complain about being able to fit things in there.  The only reason why I would want another style would be to have more shelves at eye level.
  • French door top and bottom drawer freezer.  We had a side by side in our old townhouse and nothing would fit!
