Has anyone built a DIY pergola?

The DIY stuff I've found on-line makes it look fairly straightforward. I would be building it on top of our brick paver patio. Am I fooling myself into thinking it's an easy weekend project?

Re: Has anyone built a DIY pergola?

  • Once the posts are in, it's a fairly simple process.  However, you need to think about how it will attach to the ground.  You can't just rest it on the pavers.  You'll probably need to sit the pergola posts onto concrete footers... That will require removing some paver bricks and excavating a hole.

How detailed you make the structure will also determine how long it will take.  If you want curved joists resting on the pergola, then you'll need a router with a profile tracing bit and a template...

None of the work involved is terribly difficult, but it is an effort.  I would probably say two weekends worth of work.
