Help me convience DH

Our golden retriever died in February. It was pretty freaking horrible. He was only six and the days leading up to putting him down were devastating.

Long story short. I want another retriever. Bad.

Yes, we have 2 other dogs. And I am good with 2 dogs, but I MISS Milo so much. He was such a good dog...minus the fact that he ate the majority of my stuff and ate poop...but he helped me through labor, and when Ryan would get up and go to work he would crawl into bed and lay right next to me with his head on my pillow.

DH is an adamant no. We agreed we would never have 3 dogs again.

There are golden retriever puppies available. And while I'm a HUGE advocate for adoption (both my other two are rescues) my heart aches for a golden.

And DH will be gone for 3 weeks for banking school....

AND he just bought a golf cart and a truck.

AND I gave up coaching cheerleading...for various reasons, but mostly because it stressed him out having me gone an extra 15-20 hours a week.

 Don't you think I deserve a puppy?

  • 3 dogs? God bless you!!

Can you try saying that you will have it all house trained before he got back from his trip? How old are the other 2 dogs? Hmmm I am trying to think up more arguments for you. :)

  • I'm probably going to be the unpopular opinion here, but I saw don't do it.

Even though you miss Milo, another retriever couldn't necessarily fill that gap.

I'd be hella pissed if I said no to a pet and M went and got it anyway. IMO, that cannot be a one-person decision.

I have to agree with Kate.

  • Nooooooo!!!! You guys are negative Nancy's! Smile

I totally wouldn't do it without at least an exasperated yes from DH. I mean that's how he got his golf cart...and truck...and bike...approval from me.

As for 3 dogs, it doesn't make that much more of a difference...minus the extra poop in the yard. ;)

I agree...sorry! Good luck with whatever your decision is.

  • I did get another black kitty shortly after Itty Bitty Kitty died, so I can't say anything.  While Mr. Seconds can never replace IBK, and they have such different personalities, I missed IBK terribly and "had" to get another black kitty.  So, I know the feeling of missing your old pet and wanting more of the same (even though they're not the same).

I have my 2 rabbits and 1 cat, which is quite different than 3 dogs!  Smile  I tried seeing if Mr. 2nds wanted another cat friend to come home with him from the shelter to be his buddy, but he didn't seem very interested.  He just loves me. :)  I think 2 cats and 2 rabbits would have probably been my max though.  For this reason, I can't look at petfinder!!  I'd probably have a zoo!

If I were you, and DH did say he was okay with it, I probably would get an adult dog.  I feel like a puppy might be a lot of work especially with a little one at home.  Hope you guys can figure something out!

What were your reasons for not wanting 3 dogs again?

  • I see both sides.

We got Thaddeus after Diego was missing for only a month or so because David needed a cat for his grieving process. And I am glad we did. I loved that cat.

After losing Thaddeus, we decided no more cats. And I am truly heartbroken and have re-started my daily craigslist lost and found searches for Diego. Though I know deep down after 2+ years, he is gone.

I can't imagine having a third dog though. We believed getting just one more to make two would actually be easier because Maggie was so depressed. And in some ways it is because they play together and keep each other company, but Dexter came with many issues we did not anticipate (we're still working through fence and food aggression - and I truly believe we will be until he is too old to fight anymore). And ANY pet could come with issues. And no golden will replace Milo :(

    Hugs sweetie!

Reggie had food aggression when he was a puppy. It took us a lot of time but he finally got over it.

  • As the crazy critter lady of the board - I wouldn't.

We have 3 and I love them all but I won't do it again.

If you do decide to get another I would recommend an adult.

  • I am sorry to say I have to jump on the negative nancy bandwagon here, too. You know how much of a doggie lover I am... I always thought I wanted three dogs... I had dreamed of having my yellow, chocolate and black lab trio. After experiencing a significant amount of time at my mom's house with more than two dogs... I totally went back on that idea. I never intended to have even two at this point in my life until I got a house. I never meant to have two dogs but life happened and it worked out great but even having two can be tough sometimes. I honestly love having two because it helps keep them occupied and less separation anxiety... however it is more difficult doing things like walking them, taking them to the dog park, vacation arrangements, food, even just walking around the house and tripping over animals. It's more dog fur, more cleaning, more commotion. I totally want to stick to two because it is lessons any issues when I have to be gone for long periods of time but I have to say that two is totally enough, I think. Maaayyyybe if I had a HUUUGE 1-2 acre place and they were mostly outdoor animals, it could be good. Then again, I am not in your shoes. I do not know your household or the vibe of your family so I cant tell you not to and if you did get a new puppy I would of course gush and oooh and aww it bc puppies are adorable. It's totally your call though I also agree that you might want to wait for a good, solid yes from DH before considering it and it is important to heed his reservations. :)
