Tell me about pilates, please!
I've never done pilates before, but am looking to try something new to get back into working out after having 2 babies in the last 3 years. I've read that it strengthens core muscles, which I really need to focus on. I have a lot of back pain (carrying 2 kids is really a pain!) and I have tendinitis in my hip flexors (overuse injury from teaching kickboxing classes for years). The pilates class that I'm considering is taught using a reformer machine (I would do a private lesson first).
I'm really curious for those who've done pilates, if you like it and if you'd seen improvement in your body (flexibility or core strength)?
Re: Tell me about pilates, please!
I've done a lot of pilates, first classes, then I started to do the tapes because I quit the gym. I've never done reformer machine though - my experience is mostly mat pilates. I absolutely LOVE pilates. I never thought that I would. I love high impact cardio stuff (bootcamps, kickboxing, etc) and found weight lifting really really dull. So I thought pilates would be dull. Not so at all. Maybe it was my instructor, but it turned out to be one of my favorite classes.
Pilates combined with a yoga regimen really strengthened and toned my body and kept me flexible. Have fun!
I love Pilates, and it definitely does a lot to strengthen the core. That said...
I would also suggest looking into Bikram Yoga (hot yoga - but it has to be certified Bikram, IMO). If you haven't tried it before, it's a VERY specific set of poses done for an hour and a half in 104-degree (F) temps.
It's GREAT for core, all-over strength, and stamina. It would be very helpful with two little babies!
I love pilates -- though I have only done mat pilates. I did it before/during pregnancy and I think it is one of the reasons I weathered the experience fairly comfortably (though I've only had 1 baby). I have slacked off since DD was born, but I definitely recommend it. I'd definitely start with classes -- and a private lesson sounds great. Good luck!
