strange behavior in my cat

For the past several weeks, my cat has been acting a little strange.  She is regularly a very vocal cat.  She will "talk" to me when I come home from work, when I get up in the morning, and when she comes to find me after she has been taking a nap.  She is super sweet and affectionate and we've never had any issues with her at all.  But, for the past several weeks, she will not stop meowing.  It's really strange and at first my husband and I laughed at it.  It was like she'd be running around playing and all of a sudden it'd hit her and she'd start meowing and run straight to her litter box.  At first it was just on occassion that she'd do it...and for a few days it even stopped.  But the past few nights she's been doing it again starting at 3:30 am.  Not only is it really annoying since it's so early in the morning, but she will meow non-stop for about 20 minutes until she finally goes into her litter box.  It's odd because it doesn't seem like she's in pain...she'll still play or she'll sit up on our window ledge and look out and cry (at first we thought she could be in heat but she has been spayed).  It literally is for about 20 minutes and then as soon as she is done using the litter box, the meowing stops.  I am thinking on calling the vet but again, it's odd because she doesn't seem to be in any pain and I just cleaned her litter and she seems to be having usual bowel movements.  We have not changed food, litter, or anything.  Any suggestions?

Re: strange behavior in my cat

  • Hi. I also have a vocal cat as well. She to would meow loudly at night, driving us crazy. You didn't how old she is, but sometimes meowing loudly can be a sign of dementia in older cats. But, first you want to rule out that she doesn't have anything medically wrong, so take her to the vet. If they rule she's healthly then it's behavioral. My cat was talking at night because she was lonely, so I made sure when I got home from work to give her lots of love and attention. Even letting her sleep in the bedroom with us helped quiet her down. Play with her before bed, so that it tires her out.

    Good luck!

  • She's only 1 1/2 years old so I wouldn't think it would be dementia yet.  We keep our bedroom door open for her and she sleeps on the desk beside or bed or even in bed with us when she feels like it.  Last night I tried just letting her meow instead of talking to her and calling her up on bed with us.  It probably lasted close to 20 minutes and then she used her litter and stopped for awhile.  However, we have a tree right outside our bedroom window and she'll sit on the window sill and watch the birds and squirrels and cry at them.  This morning she sat there forever crying out the window and then batting around the blinds since they are the plastic kind that make alot of noise when they move so she was playing with that.  I think she was doing it for attention since I ignored her cries earlier.  I have an appt set up with our vet so we can rule out any medical issues but at this point with how she was last night, I think it may be her wanting attention.  We keep her toys readily available for her and usually try to play most evenings if we can.  Thanks for the tips and advice!  I'll keep monitoring her and see what the vet says as well.
