Outerbanks?

looking for more information about renting a house in the outerbanks...i just started doing some research on renting a house (preferably on the beach with a private pool) for 3 familes with kids (6 of them ranging from 1-5 yrs old).  I am a bit overwhelmed by the different areas.  i know some are probably more touristy/popular than others, but was looking to see if anyone could share there experiences they have had on different parts of OBX? also if anyone has any great resources they have used in renting a house, things to do while there, as well as ANY other advise.  so to sum it up...please share any info you have about OBX, good or bad, thanks so much :)

Re: Outerbanks?

  • We really like Duck, NC.  Great homes to choose from, little bit going on, but definitely family friendly/low-key kind of place (think putt-putt golf and ice cream as a big night out).  It's reasonably close to the aquarium (if it rains) and close to dune and hang-gliding activities for adults/teens (although sounds like all the kids are youngish).

  • It's been a few years since we've been, but both DH and I really like the Avon area.  It's a lot less crowded on the beach and not as built up as some of the areas further north (although with a bunch of kids you may want somewhere with more going on).  We have rented from Hatteras Realty and Sun Realty and had good experiences with both.

  • my parents own a vacation house in the OBX, so i'm pretty familiar with the area :-)

there are basically 2 "areas"- the more northern beaches (which includes the towns of Duck, kitty hawk, nags head, kill devil hills). these areas tend to be a little more "built up", ( although still relaxing). they just have more going on- which might be nice with a bunch of kids. (more mini golf places, shopping, restaurants, etc)

And then there is hatteras island. (this is where my parents house is). Hatteras island (Cape Hatteras) is a national seashore, so parts of it are preserved. its divided up into a bunch of towns (Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco, Hatteras Village) It tends to be more "rustic" and less built up. BUT- its not like its completely remote, there are still plenty of restaurants, mini golf courses, jet ski/kayak/ hoby cat sailboat rentals, a movie theater for rainy days, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is on Hatteras island too which is nice to see ( you can walk up to the top for nice views). Its neat because they let you make bonfires on the beach at night there- nothing is cooler than sitting in front of a bonfire on a beach in the dark, looking up at at all the stars :-)  If you're staying on Hatteras Island you probably want to be in the town of Avon. Its the most "built up". There is a big food lion grocery store right there, movie theater, medical center, lots of restaurants, a spa/gym...

As far as rentals- check out Twiddy REalty, Sun Realty (sunrealtync.com). their websites should have searches where you can put in the size house you want, the town you want to stay in, etc. and check out pictures and read about it. its nice to have a private pool at the house- but most of the rental companys have pool clubs you can use if you rent a house through them.  if you have any questions, let me know!!

  • Thank you so much for your responses, very helpful!
