cleaning granite countertops

I have been doing a lot of research trying to find a good earth-friendly recipe for granite cleaner. Most of what I found said to use rubbing alcohol and dish soap, and to absolutely not use white vinegar (which I had always heard anyway). As I was getting ready to make one that I had found (actually had the bottle ready to go, just looking up the amounts) there was a comment from someone saying he or she worked at a granite place and you absolutely should not use rubbing alcohol and should use vinegar. Now I am completely confused! Any advice or suggestions? I may call the place we got the granite from, but I just have a feeling they will direct us to a specific granite cleaner, and I really don't want the chemicals.

  • I am confused about it too so I have stuck with Method Daily Granite cleaner. Smells nice too.

  • 1/2 cup rubbing alcohol, 2 cups water, oil, 8 drops dawn dish soap, It is really easy to make, just add all the ingredients to the spray bottle and use it.
  • I have been using this cleaner from Tipnuts.com, after many researched without any trouble for over 3 years now on my granite/travertine marble, no issue at all.

     2 cups water

    1/2 cup distilled white vinegar

1 tsp pure castile soap (peppermint, etc.)
    3/4 cup hydrogen peroxide
    20 drops tea tree oil
20 drops lavender or lemongrass essential oil.

    Directions:

    • Mix all ingredients in a 32-ounce plastic spray bottle.

Can be used on surfaces of acrylic, ceramic tile, wood, marble and granite.

Update: A few comments were lost when I merged the two articles, I went digging through my old backups and found one in particular that I wanted to keep:
