Help with barking/correcting behavior in public please.

We have a 1 yr old mini schnauzer.  We resisted getting a dog for a long time because we are gone almost every weekend in the summer on motorcycle camping trips and didn't feel it was right to continually kennel a dog.  But more and more people in the camping club brought their dogs with and we saw how it can work.

So we intentionally got  a smaller dog and have trained him to like the motorcycle, ride on the motorcycle (in a locked protective carrier) and started taking him camping this spring.  He's done wonderful.  Until last weekend.

He believes that every dog wants to ruff and tumble play when they're together.  And he's used to this when we take him to the dog park or to a friend's house where they have one of his litter mates.  Well this weekend there were other dogs in our group that were skittish of dogs and actually sharled and showed teeth, so our pup barked back.  And the other dogs didn't want to play, but our dog kept trying to go over by them to sniff and start playing.  Then he would bark.  He is REALLY intent on play with other dogs.

I want to start correcting his barking and wanting every dog to play.  But don't really know how to appropriately do that.  I don't want to stop him from playing at the dog park or with other dogs that he knows.

Any suggestions?

  • work on strong Come, Stay and Leave it commands to get him away from dogs that don't want to play/you don't want him to play with.  Redirect him to play with you or a toy.  At a year, he's going to have a lot of energy, so it's going to require you to give him a lot of attention and exercise.  As he gets older he will learn from other dogs how to tell if they want to play or not (at least he will if you keep socializing him as you have been).
  • O- I need help with this too- my pup loves to play with other dogs- but he barks at them to get attention. Some dogs don't like it, but I don't know how to get him to stop.
