Coffee?

Lately, after I drink my morning coffee, my stomach starts to hurt.  At first I just thought it was because I would drink my coffee in the morning as I got ready for work and then eat my breakfast bar later when I got to work.  I started eating my breakfast and drinking my coffee together in the morning but that didn't really seem to help either.  My stomach starts to hurt really bad as if I really have to go to the bathroom and I even feel a bit nauseous at times as well.  I keep thinking maybe I'm starting to become lactose intolerant because I'm one of those people who basically makes their coffee with more milk than coffee and a good helping of sugar. (not healthy I know but I don't like my coffee black).  Also, I will drink just a cup of milk, eat a bowl of cereal with milk, or have some yogurt and I don't get a stomach ache with any of that.  I even got to the point where I was worried that I might be pregnant because the stomach ache and nauseous feeling would only happen in the morning but I'm not pregnant.  Any suggestions?  I mean obviously I could stop drinking coffee but I love the taste and also sometimes need the caffeine to get going in the am.  Also, it's usually just 1 cup in the morning so it's not like I'm drinking 2 or 3 cups a day like some people I work with.

Re: Coffee?

  • Maybe you can slowly wean yourself off.  I used to eat cereal with milk in the morning which would give me gas.  I then switched to rice milk and that made me feel better.

Perhaps you can use Green Tea for your caffine fix?  I know it doesn't taste as good but it's that or stomach pains.  I never got into the habit of drinking coffee though I used to drink Pepsi twice a day.  I never thought I could give it up becausing drinking plain water with my meals seemed so weird; like something was missing.  When I realized it was keeping me up at night I weaned myself off it.  Now I don't like the taste of Pepsi and I usually crave water with meals.

  • Have you switched brands of coffee?  I react differently to certain brands and blends.

  • I would try a low-acid coffee or black tea. Also, maybe try gradually cutting down the sugar. Good luck, I know it's hard to separate from coffee. I bet if you experiment with low-acid blends you can keep it. One cup of coffee a day is not excessive.
