im more of a bumpie than a nestie but i figured i'd come over and see what you guys thought. it's long but if you can please read it and give me your opinions.
DS is 13 months and I'm planning on starting his big boy room soon. His nursery will stay the nursery even though we don't plan to have another baby til he's 3. He'll move to the room next to the nursery slightly larger. I had all along planned on doing four walls four different colors bright primary colors:blue, red, green and yellow or orange (can't decide but whichever doesnt get used on the fourth wall will be used in his closet).
What i need help with is his furniture. I had originally planned on painting all his furniture (headboard, dresser, bookshelf, and little desk and chair which would both be the same color) one of the four wall colors and putting them on a different color wall. Do you think that would be too much different color everywhere?
Another idea i had was to paint the frame of his dresser blue, the drawers red, and then have big round knobs/handles painted yellow. Then I'd paint the frame(outside) of his bookshelf green and paint the background(what you would see behind his books) yellow. THe chair that will go with his desk is already orange(it used to be my brothers) so I was going to keep it orange and paint the desk (which was mine as a little girl) orange to match. I'm not sure what to do with his headboard, either paint it all read or pick one base color for the main frame part and do the spindles/rails all different color. Im leaning towards doing it all one color.
Which would look better? the multi-colored furniture or the four pieces being four different colors? or is it all just too much color?
Other ideas/plans
-im going to paint his door(the side in his room) and his closet door (both on the same wall) the same color that wall is, leaving the grooves in the door white
-paint the ceiling fan one color from his room or possibly one of each color in his room (just the blades that spin not the whole fan)
-get wooden letters that spell his name and put over his bed painted a different color than the wall their on
His room will be construction themed. Comforter will be mainly blue with all colored tractors/cars/trucks on it. (under construction by olive kids if you want to google it. i would like to display his tonka trucks and tractors on his shelf. Thinking about possibly hanging an airplane in one corner of his room. I found five framed pictures of tonka like trucks on ebay in the colors of his room so i was going to possibly get them. I'd like to paint any pictures frames the colors or the room also.
So what do you think? is it all too much color? what would you skip doing? or does it all sound alright? I just want someone else's opinion before i put all that time and work into it besides my husband who kinda just agrees with me lol. Thanks so much!
Re: decorating toddler boys room help
I beg you, BEG YOU by all that is holy, not to do that to your child's room.
I wrote 2 paragraphs trying to explain what all was wrong with your plan, but how about instead of tearing you down, I build you up? I love the bedding you chose! Super cute!
I get where you were going with the primary colors, but let's suffice it to say that's not a good idea. How about you paint his room a pale blue and give him white furniture? Or what if you paint his room tan and give him ONE accent wall - whatever wall his headboard sits on? If you paint his room a tolerable color, you'll be able to better appreciate things like his name spelled out.
If you paint his furniture white, you can use it later on for anything. If you paint it crazy colors, you won't be able to without lots of effort on your part. Why not search out cute cars and trucks for drawer pulls? Way more fun than mismatched colors.
Please don't paint the door. It's really, really not cute done like that IRL.

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.

This is a great example. It's colorful, but not IN YOUR FACE. This room would even be ok if you painted the walls yellow or light green.
How about this? It's bright, but not all over the place. It's got plenty of different colors for accent.
Or this
You can go bold without it looking tacky.
That sounds a bit overwhelming I know that would be sensory overload for both me and my toddler. I think a solid neutral color on all walls and then a pop color on the furniture would be nice.
Honestly, with that much color I think his room would end up looking like a Circus Circus hotel room from the mid 90's.
I LOVE the second photos TheWop posted. I'd stick with one color on the walls, and either a wood tone or dark blue (or a mixture of the two) for furniture. Sometime similar to what you see like this from Land of Nod:
And then add more color with pillows, art work, or other accessories.
You are going to give your kid a seizure if you do that to him.
If you really insist on doing multiple wall colors, what about something like this?

Look at this pic. The left side. The room you describe is going to look like this but with even more colors. Is that really the look you're going for?
I echo PP's....
DO NOT paint the walls 4 different colors...other then being visually overload, for a small childs development it can be hard to focus, and my experience with little boys is that most of them have a hard time staying calm and focused in the first place....and forget trying to a put a small child to bed in a busy busy colourful room and to stay asleep all night and feel rested in the morning!

I know i'm very late to this post but just in case you read it here is my advice. When we moved into our house DS' room was painted 4 different colors (one on each wall and yes they were all primary colors). It really did look tacky and it took FOREVER to paint over it, especially the red. Even with a good tinted primer. Just some food for thought for the future.
