Kitchen Reno - Advice?

We just bought a house and the kitchen is going to be our winter project. Currently, it has dark wood floors (which we are definitely keeping, I love them) and stainless with black appliances.

Someone told me that because the floors are dark, we should go with lighter cabinets and counters. But, I think that would seem strange.....

Any advice?

  • Our kitchen has a dark gray floor, cream cabinets, and dark countertops. We painted the walls a light beige-ish gray and I think it looks great :o)

My parents have cherry floors and cherry cabinets, but have light countertops.  I also like the way that looks.

  • We have dark floors, bright white cabinets and black granite in a portion of our kitchen and a light green granite on our island.

What is most important is to balance out the floors. I don't think dark floors and dark cabinets would look good unless you were VERY careful about your backsplash and countertops.

  • My favorite style is ss appliances, dark wood floors, white cabinets, and marble counters - lovely

  • You just need contrast between the floors and the cabinets. Otherwise, it looks weird. So you'd want either a really light wood or white to contrast with the dark floors.

Completely agree. We just bought a house with light wood cabinet, light granite countertops, white floors and white appliances. I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out a cheap and efficient way to fix it.
