So the girl is turning 1 in a couple weeks and I am STUMPED on what type of food to serve. Any great ideas...?
If this helps-
Party is at 1.
Mostly adults, maybe 2 or 3 other toddler/kids will be there.
It's a Minnie Mouse birthday.
I would like the menu to work well together and something more than just chips and pizza.
I have been scouring the internet for websites that be helpful, but not much luck. I'm a moderate cook and can follow a recipe. The only thing I definitely want to do is to serve fruit...like watermelon in different shapes, Mickey head, bow, number 1 (using cookie cutters). Any and all ideas welcome! Thanks!
Re: 1st Birthday!
Italian Beef, Chicken, and Pasta are our usual 1st birthday foods.
Michaels sells a Toodles punch that would be easy to add to the food you make. Punch a bunch out and glue it to toothpicks to add decoration to your dish.
If you watch the show, I vote for hotdogs! Tee hee (Hot dog dance)
You could make rice crispy treats and cut out the shapes too....or jello. I'm pretty sure Target sells Mickey Mouse serving ware. I'm not sure if that is seasonal or not, but they had plates, chip bowls, dip bowls, etc. not too long ago.
Best wishes!
For food- think about time of year, what you would like to eat, what people might expect, and what's on sale (at least I look at sale). Also consider what you can cook. It's a lot easier to use recipes you know so you can enjoy the day.
We do most of our parties at 1. I pick a few simple apps to have out until everyone gets there- cheese and crackers, veg tray, hummus and pita, shrimp, apples and peanut butter dip are standard with usually 1 new thing thrown in.
For the meal I try to do as much the day before as possible and limit day of prep to maybe one thing. This time of year you might think about something grilled with a few fresh salads and one hot side. Pulled pork/beef/chicken. is good too. My sister has done taco bars that have gone over really well too.
If you want to try to put together a sample menu we can give you some feedback.
The only other thing I'll say. I had a butterfly theme for my DD's first. I had every intention of using a butterfly cutter to make the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. After cutting out 4 I realized it was a PITA and just put those 4 on the top of the platter.
I'm usually anti-theme, but this could be really fun. And you could do a whole condiments bar to make it more adult as well: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes-and-cooking/30-ways-to-top-a-hot-dog/pictures/index.html
