Hair Salon Recommendations, Anyone?

We just moved to the Boston area and I am over-due for a cut/color. We don't know many people around here but I have checked with a few and am wondering what is "normal" as far as pricing around here - I'm hoping $200 was just because she goes to a place in Cambridge.

Anyone have a place they like they isn't as pricey? I am definitely willing to drive a ways if it means not dishing out $200 every four weeks!

  • I don't have an answer since I don't color my hair but you might get more answers posting here: http://pandce.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=boston

We've all pretty much abandoned the Nest after their shittastic handling of the boards several months ago.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • Salon 1604 in Quincy is great. I just moved to the area as well and needed a salon for all wedding preparations. I found them on a google search and loved them! very affordable too.. definitely not 200 a wack.
  • I'm not sure where you live but I go to Michelle at Evolve Salon in Waltham.  I don't pay $200 for a hair cut...MUCH less. She does a fabulous job. I also get color/highlights.
  • I go to Judy Jetson, near Porter Square in Cambridge.  I can never remember my stylist's name (I'm really awful at names...) but I think it's Lauren (?).  She's pretty great (can recommend her boyfriend, the dog trainer, for any unruly pups!) and good with curly/wavy hair since she has it herself.  It costs $60 for a regular cut and style, and I know she and her assistant do color jobs as well, and Lauren (?) usually makes it so it's 6 weeks at minimum before I have to go back, if not 3 months.

My last trip there was a little stressful, seeing as I went in with a "do whatever, you know best!" attitude... My almost-down-to-the-boobs length ended up as a pixie cut about an hour later - tears were inevitable, but I wanted until after my girls' night book club and presidential debate #2 before I had my breakdown. However, it's starting to grow on me, and it is super chic and flattering. Circa Audrey Hepburn/Anne Hathaway shortness.  It's about time for me to go in for a touch-up, actually!

Hope you enjoy Boston!  The Back Bay/South End stylists are pretty expensive, but the further out of Downtown Crossing/Copley you get, the better your price I think. Also, if your hubby could use a non-Super Cuts style (my husband refuses to pay over $35 for a cut, sigh...), then David at JJ is pretty phenomenal. Good luck!

  • Michael Roffi on Newbury Street is where I go. I love it and wish I'd found it sooner. J is great, I seriously have the best time when she cuts my hair!

  • As stated before not to sure what you consider the Boston area. My hairdresser is in Canton, her name is Fina and she runs Bionda Salon. When I do a cut and color (full) it is usually around $140, when I get a partial color or touch up it is much much less. Good luck!
