Binge eating questions

Hi guys! I'm looking for advice.  I'm 5'3, weight 132 and trying to get down to 125 - possibly 120. Since July 1, I started strength training 3 times a week and doing cardio 6 days a week.  I've limited myself to 1600 calories a day.  Well...I did awesome the first two weeks! Ate really healthy, felt energetic and I know I lost a little around my waist because my shorts/pants are slipping down my hips.

Well....two nights ago I was craving salt and sugar and went WAY overboard. :( And even worse, I did it again last night.  Why does this happen? How can I make it stop? I know I'm in control of my body and what I put in it.  I know the more you eat fatty, salty, sugary foods it makes you feel good and you crave it more.  I'd like to be able to eat "unhealthy" foods in a limited amount, but it seems like everytime I have 1 cookie, I end up eating 10 more.  I hate it.  I'll do really good and eat super healthy and feel great - and then I'll blow it one night (or two, in this case).  Any suggestions?  Thanks for your help! I appreciate it!

Re: Binge eating questions

  • You are probably not eating enough at 1600 calories and working out 6 days a week. WHAT are you eating? How much protein? Are you allowing yourself to have some salty/sugar food in moderation?

  • stop keeping cookies, fattening and super salty foods that you shouldn't eat in the house :)

no seriously. you can't eat them if they're not there. if you can't control yourself for only 1 or 2 cookies you need to not have them around.  you can also go to the store and buy a small bag of chips or one of those 2 cookie packs. you can also get sorbet etc..-healthier snacks.

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • I'm eating super health. I eat breakfast around 7/8 and usually it's 2 eggs on a whole wheat tortilla. Sometimes I'll have a half of a whole-wheat bagel with peanut butter. Then I workout mid-morning and  I have a protein shake after my workouts (usually 1 serving of fruit, 1/2 scoop protein powder, 1/2 non-fat greek yogurt, 1/2 c. low-sugar orange juice and ice).  I usually have a "whatever lunch" - usually it's 1-2 servings of different veggies, healthy carbs (whole wheat pasta - that has the whole wheat stamp), almonds, maybe a slice of string cheese, maybe 1 serving of fruit. I'll usually eat a small snack in the afternoon - Kashi crackers and salsa or nuts.  Dinner I'll usually eat a little of whatever I made for my husband (he likes mexican food a lot) or something healthier I'll make just for myself.  So, maybe it's because I restrict myself so much that I just crave the salty/sugary stuff and go overboard when I get it? I just have "eat in moderation" issues when I eat it sometimes...and not all the time either.

  • Yes, thanks! I agree!

This! I know that my willpower is only strong enough to make it through the grocery store, if I bring any cookies home with me, all bets are off!

  • It sounds to me like you're not getting enough protein. Do you eat meat? Or just get protein strickly from grains/beans and dairy? Do you track how many calories you are eating?
  • I agree with doglove. You need to up your proten. Try to have some at every meal/snack. The almonds at lunch aren't going to cut it.
  • Good suggestion! I'll try this! I don't eat a lot of red meat simply cuz I don't like the taste; I prefer chicken over red meat.  And I don't even eat a lot of chicken, maybe 5-6 times a week with one of my meals?  I'll definitely up the protein!! Yes, I measure my food out and write it down in a food journal so I know exactly what I'm eating. I rarely eat out, but if I do I always look up the nutrition facts online before I go out so I can figure that in and chose "healthy" (as healthy as eating out can be).  Thank you!!
