buying a home with a pet grave

We close on our first house in 2 weeks and when we did our initial tour of the home I noticed in the back corner of the back yard (so the end of the half acre) a wooden cross. I assume it?s a pet (at least I hope it's just a pet).The marker is old so I assume that the owner will not be removing it.

DH and I are both animal lovers (we have 2 indoor cats), and don't want to disrespect anybody or the pet but I also don't want to be looking at a grave marker while enjoying our yard with our son.

What is the proper etiquette for this type of situation?

I say that we should say a few nice words and get rid of the marker (we would NEVER dig anything up!).

That sounds good to me.  You could always put a decorative rock there to mark it.  Just in case you ever want to do work there in the future.

Once you sign on the dotted line, everything is yours.  I would double check that it's Fido not uncle Frank buried back there.  But marking it with a rock or something is a good idea, so it stays buried.

Can you remove the cross and place a flat garden stone in its place?

I'm sure it's awkward for the old owners too, having to decide whether to take the pet with them. I agree with the others, changing the marker sounds like a good idea, maybe put a garden stone or a perennial there instead.

The cross is way in the back by the forest line, so it's not something that will need to happen the day we move in. I love the idea of a perennial or stone.

I second (third?) the stone or perennial suggestion. Or maybe you could plant a tree there. i think a living marker would be lovely.
