What would you serve along with this menu?

For Christmas Eve...

I know.  But I'm pregnant, due in the beginning of January.  My son's birthday is December 29.  I don't think I need any more excuses :)  I am getting prepared WAY WAY early.  Sparked by talking to the owner of our favorite restaurant about he caters for Christmas Eve.

Anyway, the current menu:

Lobster Bisque Soup (very rich, creamy)

Gourmet Mac and Cheese (we are ordering this from an amazing local restaurant)

Red Velvet Cake with Pistachio Ice Cream for dessert

I'm hoping to get some suggestions for:

Appetizers

Anything to go with the soup/mac and cheese (bread, vegetable, etc?)

THank you, I appreciate your help so far before the deadline!

Re: What would you serve along with this menu?

  • I'm seeing a need for meat and something green, maybe a salad.

For apps, you can't go wrong with a cheese plate and various small bites.

How many guests? Sit down or grazing? Type of guests (more traditional or liking different tastes)?

  • There will be 11 adults.  My 2 year old will be the only child but if his eating habits continue I'll have to have something separate for him anyway.

It's going to be sit down dinner.  The guests definitely have more traditional tastes.

I like the idea of adding a salad... Didn't even consider that!

I agree with pp... I'd do some sort of spinach salad... maybe with walnuts and cranberries...

then for bread I'd just go to a local bakery and get something really good that you don't have to do anything to, just slice to serve with soup

Then I think I would look for a meat appetizer and a veggie appetizer....

    - maybe chicken bites wrapped in bacon with some sort of sauce?

    - could just do crudite platter for the veggies

    - or maybe asparagus wrapped in proscuitto

  • Unless your family are all vegetarians, I feel like a meat is needed.

Crab legs our a white fish are good if everyone eats/prefers seafood.

Prime rib, Tenderloin Roast, Cornish Hens & Ham all seem like Christmas meals to me.  Mac-n-cheese just does not cut it alone as a meal, no matter how good it is.

Another veggie dish would also be good.  Even simple broccoli or green beans.

  • It sounds like you are going to be a busy girl preparing what you have listed already.  I'd suggest a meat that can go in the crockpot and still be great.  Maybe a pork roast.
  • I would definitely try maybe adding fruit and veg... I like the idea of a salad, or maybe some sort of steamed/grilled vegetable medley, with olive oil and lots of seasonings.

Could you add a fruit salad to your appetizer round?

I also think a meat of some sort would be good.  Try to make sure you're covering all your food groups!

  • Appetizer-sized Beef Wellingtons sound like they would go wonderfully with this menu.  I don't have a recipe handy, but allrecipes.com would help.  They might even be an app you can assemble ahead of time and freeze...
