how many estimates do you get for a major project?

We want nearly the entire interior of our home painted.  We just moved in and it clearly hasn't been done in YEARS.  We got one quote where the owner of the company walked around the house and talked with us for about 30 minutes about what we wanted done and then quoted $3800 on the spot.  This week we had an aesthetic paint co. come and came back with a written estimate a week later to do the same work at just under $10,000.  Such a large discrepancy makes me want a third quote...thoughts on how you would proceed?

If the 1st 2 were closer, I'd just pick one of those...but with the gap I'd go for a 3rd

With something like that, 3 or 4.

And professional painting is like that - some people truly believe their ability to hold a paint brush steady means they should be paid $30/hr.  I've had great luck dismissing the polished, high priced painters and going with the less polished, country painters with reasonable quotes.

I typically do 3-5, depending on the prices and the project (and how much time I have).
