I Cant sleep, ugh.

I can't fall asleep at all. And I'm getting aggravated because our bew neighbors upstairs are stomping around and I'm not talking about just walking across hardwood floors I'm talking like digging their heels into it. They do it a little bit during the day but seriously at 2:30 in the morning, that's ridiculous.  My DH keeps waking up and I feel bad because he's exhausted. I just don't know what to do? I want to say something but I don't want to start anything, and plus I'm a little shy when it comes to things like that. *new^

Have you met your new neighbors yet?  When you see them in passing, you can introduce yourself, and then maybe ask them if they work late at night, that you hear them when they get home... maybe that will get them thinking to be more quiet.

Or you can ask your landlord to say something to them, to be at least mindful late at night.

  • How long ago did they move in? If they moved in within the last week, my guess would be that they are just wrapped up in getting settled and hopefully in the next week they will quiet down.

If it's been more than 2 weeks since they moved in, I would either introduce yourself and let them know that you can hear them walking around at 2:30am, or tell the landlord if it persists. Quiet time is from 10pm to 8am, generally, so it can be enforced.

Keep in mind though, especially if there are hardwood floors, that sounds echos. So they may just be walking around, and it just sounds like jumping and stomping, especially at night when there isn't a lot of other noises.

Good luck! I totally understand the apartment situation and was so happy to get a house and no longer have an upstairs neighbor!

  • No we haven't met them, we've tried getting an idea of who it is but we can't tell who lives up there. This morning before my DH left for work he said he was going to make a stop at the office after work, so we will see how that works.

  • It's been a month or so, and at first we were really patient but then it just got to the point where they or whoever it is does it really late at night. It sounds like someone marching, or slamming things against the floor. We understand you will hear some noise above you but ugh lol. Im so glad I have somewhere to vent, thank you. I cannot wait until we move into our first house. Sometime next July, I'll probably just have to buy ear plugs lol.

  • Wow, a month? Yeah, they probably either work evenings or early mornings. So that's probably them either getting ready for work or for bed. Or they are just night owls. We had someone who lived upstairs in one of our first apartments and they did the same thing. They would walk around stomping, then open and shut the slider door like every five seconds. I think it was just one person too. Luckily they moved out a couple weeks after we moved in, but we never saw them either.

Then in our most recent apartment, just before moving into our house, we had an older couple (in their 50's) who didn't work and were hoarders, who lived upstairs. We would hear things falling over during the day, and we kept saying it sounded like a bowling ball. Then right before we would fall asleep at like 11 or 11:30pm, we would hear their bed start creaking, then very loud sex sounds. Yeah...being a downstairs neighbor is not fun...lol It made for a funny story though!

Hopefully the landlord will be able to do something for you guys. Good luck!

  • I had neighbors like that.  I heard everything, E V E R Y T H I N G 0.o

We mentioned it a couple of times to them, and they seemed to try but it was an old building so its not like we can mute ourselves from each other.

You shouldn't have to necessarily knock on their door and harass them.  I would acquaint myself and slowly hand them the blow.
