Seperate car insurance from parents?

Hi all,

My boyfriend and I are looking to move out from our parents house and get out own place.  We were wondering if we HAVE to be removed from our parents car insurance when we move out.  Does it matter if we buy or rent?  Married or not married?  When is it necessary for us to break away from our parents car insurance plan?

Thanks!

Re: Seperate car insurance from parents?

  • It depends on your car insurance company. My parents had AAA and they required that all dependents were full-time students. I got to the point that it was impossible for me to maintain 12 units in college with a full-time job, so I switched and got my own.

I would suggest either calling the insurance company yourself, or having your parents call to find out what would disqualify you.  I don't think moving out would impact your insurance, but I could be wrong.

  • if you are grown up enough to move out and get your own place, you are grown up enough to have your own insurance.

  • If your address on the car insurance, and the address on your drivers liscence is different then your parents, then you pay for your own insurance, AAA, BCAA, etc..

This. You're an adult. Get your own policy.

  • We got married 3 weeks ago and are in the process of looking for a house.  We're both still on our parents' car insurance just because we don't really have a permanent address of our own yet (renting) and we're trying to minimize lost paperwork as a result of the move.  Once we get our own house & my name is changed everywhere then we'll be getting our own policy.

I think as long as you don't get kicked off the policy for being married (never heard of this) then it's ok to stay on it until you are settled in your own home (provided it's ok with your parents).

This is what we're doing as well. Even though I'm "on" my parent's insurance plan, I pay them monthly.
  • There are insurance that you can get. You can see this link for young drivers like you.

  • I was still on my parent's car insurance throughout my seven years in college - but I was a full time student that entire time, and the title/registration was still in my parents' name for the car, I was just listed as the primary driver.

Like PPs suggested, I would call your particular insurance company to see what the policy is.

  • Thank you for your responces.  Because we're still young, we were thinking the cost might be lower if we stayed on our parents for a little while.  Our parents are really helpful and wouldn't mind us on their policies at first if it meant saving us money.  We're still between renting and buying so I was wondering if that effected it at all and definitely once we're married we'd have our own policy but that wouldn't be for a little while longer.

I'll call the insurance companies once we find a place.

    Thanks! :)
