Recommend your face sunscreen!

Help me! I used to use the Coppertone oil free for my face ALL the time. It worked so well... Then, on our honeymoon to the Mediterranean last year (of all times), I had bought a brand new bottle and it made my face break out uncontrollably. We're talking hundreds of pimples... I've never had such horrid looking skin. In any case, I tried it once afterward when we got home, thinking it may have been the stifling heat/ sweat factor over there mixed with the product. I got the same results.

A friend suggested oil free Aveeno. I tried it during my last Caribbean vacation. Same thing. WTH is going on? I use oil free moisturizer every day (Biore) with no issues, but it's not enough protection for full sun all day long.

Any suggestions/ recommendations anyone?

Re: Recommend your face sunscreen!

  • I would probably see a derm about the abrupt breakout. but I'm super vain! lol.

anyway, I love love love Shiseido! The have a bottle (not a tube) that is super smooth. and the best part is the very high SPF. never feels greasy or thick.

  • It could be a reaction to the chemical sunscreens in those products, not oil. The benzones in chemical sunscreens can cause allergic reactions (and they are less effective sun protection.)

Look for a mineral sunBLOCK.  Active ingredients to look for: titanium dioxide, zinc oxide

ETA: I use Neutrogena Pure and Free on my face with no problems; I also use BB creams and tinted moisturizers with titanium and/or zinc sunblock

  • This is what I use:
    http://www.dermstore.com/product_Ti-Silc+Sheer+SPF+45_1645.htm

If you contact a dermatologist, they may provide you with samples, allowing you to try out a number of sunscreens and then you buy the one you like

  • If it's happened twice with 2 different brands, it is probably you, not the sunscreen.

I use this powder mineral sunscreen, which I love:

Might not be great for sun/beach since it is powder and would wash off, but for times I'm not going in the water it works great.  Pair it with a hat and you might just be okay going without anything else!

  • I use Cerave AM moisturizer for daily use and Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch sunblock for times when I'm outside and active (softball, beach, running, etc.)  I have very sensitive skin.

    Good luck!!

  • I use MD solar science SPF 50. It's the lime green bottle. Ultra sheer. Works like a primer!

  • I'm sorry you had such a bad reaction!  Have you tried just using a moisturizer with SPF?  I have really sensitive and oily skin so I use Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Water light Daily Face Sunscreen.  It;s so light and gentle!  My fiance hates stuff on his face but even he liked this one.  If nothing seems to be working for you, I suggest you see a dermatolagist and start using an all natural sunblock for your face (available at health stores).
