My Blog
I've cruised twice - 10 years ago we took a 2 week trip:
7 days in Fairbanks where we boarded a riverboat/saw Susan Butcher (winner of the Iditarod) and visited a husky/reindeer farm, panned for gold...
Anchorage had a fantastic hotel. This was the BIG city
,
took the train to Denali (soooo many animals) where we stayed a couple days in a lodge. We took a whitewater raft trip through part of the park where we saw bears and bald eagles...
then we boarded a ship in seward and visited Ketchikan (my favorite!!!), Juneau, cruised through Glacier Bay, and Skagway. On this trip we didnt know we timed it right, but we even saw the Northern Lights one night. We flew home from Seattle.
Last summer DH and I took a 10 day cruise there, and it was roundtrip from San Francisco. This saved us a ton on airfare. This one stopped in
Juneau (not my favorite - the tour bus we booked to Mendenhall Glacier broke down and we had to haggle with them to give us a refund!),
Skagway - this was actually one of our favorite experiences on this trip. We rented a car from Avis, downloaded Murray's Guide (google it) for $5, and explored the Klondike Hwy at our own pace. It was freaking gorgeous!!!
Ketchikan is my favorite city - we visited Totem Blight State park (only $1 to take the city bus there, and the park is free), watched the salmon run, did some great shopping on Creek Street where I bought the greatest doll handmade in Alaska, watched the float planes taking off, etc. There's something quite charming about this town.
Victoria: We went to the parliament building, walked through the Empress where many people go for high tea, and I found the most amazing hats at this place called Roberta's Hats. I bought two cloche hats and they are stunning. DH also bought a fisherman's cap and we bought one for my brother too. This was a beautiful city and I wish we would have had more time here. As we were leaving we even saw orcas!
Each day I probably walked/jogged at least 7 miles on the deck. There were whales constantly - on one of my jogs I must have seen 30 whales, as well as some sea otters.
Glacier Bay is a must. I wouldn't book a cruise without stopping there. Youtube Marjorie Glacier. The day we went last summer a chunk of ice more than 50 stories tall fell off and plunged into the water. It made a wave so big that the boat bobbed!
I could talk for days about Alaska. They were running a $800 10 day cruise/land tour special for next month. I was so tempted to pull the trigger
but we're getting our bathroom remodeled!
Lemme know if you have questions!
Michelle, that sounds awesome!!
Alise, why was your answer so sketchy?! It's a secret that someone knows about Alaska? Lol
Pst.... they have gold there...
