What would you wear to interview?

What would you wear to an interview when you were specifically told the environment is super casual and CEO will be wearing jeans and sneakers to your interview (it is a start up web business)?

Re: What would you wear to interview?

  • IMHO, it depends on the role- engineering and dev teams tend to be super causal, whereas sales and marketing are external facing and tend to be a little less causal. Design teams tend to be more trendy.

Don't overdress- so skip the suit. Don't underdress either- ripped jeans, t-shirt, flip flops.  Beyond that, dress in whatever makes you feel confident, shows some personality, and gives a nod of respect to the interview process. Generally speaking, I'd recommend if you choose to go with jeans, make sure they are dark and look neat.

If it helps, I've worked at casual tech companies...

  • Avoid the suit and dressed up outfits. But, I'd actually skip the jeans no matter how dark they are and go for a grey or tan pant with a bright top and some really fun shoes.

This is what I'd do. Khaki colored slacks and a bright top with cute accessories.

  • I would disagree with the others.

I would dress in a suit and if you think its too smart, then maybe skip wearing the jacket.  Skirt with a nice blouse with tights and small heals and very tasteful jewelery would be ideal I think.  Don't wear too much make-up. A bit of conceler, foundation and powder, with a bit of blush, mascara and a nice gloss for your lips.  Simple is effective.  It has worked for me on my interviews.

You need to show that you are professional and that you take this interview seriously and with thought.

Sometimes they will make a trap by wearing super casual clothes. Oh they are "Super Friendly" , don't let your guard down and always have a smile, be polite and professional!

    Well, that's my 2cents.   Yes

Here's a different take on things. HR managers and hiring manager aren't out to trap you, they are just trying to figure out if you're a good fit for the company culture as well as the role.

By providing you with information about how the team dresses, they were giving you insight into how to fit into company culture by letting you know that you don't have to feel obligated dress up.

  • Funny I wrote on this post, I have an interview tomorrow!! Found out this morning.

My interview is super casual, in a pub for lunch! HA!  I will let you know how I get on. I am still wearing a skirt and blouse with nice shoes. It is for a professional position, so it shall be interesting :-)

    Good luck today!

I ended up wearing black pants, flats, and a blouse. I was way over dressed - the people I met were all in flip flops and shorts!  No one seemed to notice though.  Thanks for the advice, ladies.

  • Wow, shorts and flip flops?  That tells me a bit about them to be honest.

I got the job!  I am glad I wore what I wore!!  Dream job finally found :-)

How did you get on Obsession?
