What's to come?

Hi! My husband and I were just wondering what we can expect now that we're married. We've known each other for 9 years, dated for 6 of those years, and lived together for 2 years. We just got married last month and thought it was funny whenever someone asked us how the married life was because there wasn't any difference between before and after. I know changes will eventually come and we were wondering what some of those changes might be?

Re: What's to come?

  • Uhh, that's kind of up to you guys. LOL. Careers, kids, home ownership...it's all up to you really. How old are you guys? That will make a difference.

We're both 22--I'm about to turn 23 in August. My husband just finished college and is looking into grad school. I just didn't know if there was something we're missing here--some big transformation we're supposed to go through now that we're officially married, y'know? Lol!

  • My husband and I are recently married, 30 days tomorrow :) We got married on the 7 year anniversary of our first date. We have lived together collectively for 5 years out of the 7 (before getting married).

We purchased a house last July, so we have been in our home for a year now. People have asked us "How's married life?" a few times, but I think that is just a way of congratulating us and keeping things light. We haven't really noticed much of a difference in our daily lives. I just figure it means they we were ready for the status change.

I changed my name to his so everyone calls me by that name now. I guess everyone is just excited for us.

We are 31 & 36. I have about two semesters to finish my BA. He already has his career going.

We are thinking TTC in 2 years.

  • Yeah, again, the change is really up to the people involved.

Some of my friends mentioned that it just "feels" different because of the permanence.. but for us, I don't know, I guess we must have felt permanent before.. we're just kinda living life and everything is basically the same!

lol, spoken like a true 22 year old.  "I'm married!  I did it!  I have arrived!"

well, for starters, most people are very different at 32 than who they were at 22, so there's that transformation.  The whole brain finishing maturing around age 25 plays into that.  Other transformations:  finishing school, continuing education, finding jobs in your chosen career path, losing jobs, learning what it means to work a real, grown-up job, moving, buying a house, having kids, adjusting to having kids (yes, your marriage will change if/when this happens), figuring out how to still be in love with each other when the spark is weak, the kids make you crazy, you haven't had sex in over a month, and the hottie in your office is flirting with you.....

    you know, life. In general.

So yeah, you have a few transformations coming up.

  • The only change for us is that people stopped asking us when we're getting married.

  • People are already asking us when the babies are coming. This started AT the wedding!

That seems a little condescending. Granted I am 21 Married (have been for almost 8 months). Got married at 20. We lived together for 9 months previously. The question was whether there was a change or some mysterious quality to actually being married. In my experience so far no. The whole "how is married life?" question can either be seen as outdated to some who would not think of getting married without living together or just seen as a gesture like "how are you?" without actually wanting the real answer. Any of my friends actually expecting a real answer, I tell them that we had been living together for 9 months and were best friends before that so not much different.

The comments previous were just explaining how life changes, which is sort of obvious :)

  • Thanks for that! I just get a little frustrated at comments such as those. There is sort of a blanket effect to them that is just a little infuriating

  • i do think it's annoying to be patronized.  my husband and i were together for 5 years before we got married, and we had lived together beforehand.  so it didn't feel that different.  it just feels more official :)  good luck to you!
  • If you have lived together I do not think much changes, it really only changed when we had kids.
