Flying with a pet in cabin tips?

Hi all,

on Wednesday evening my pup and I will be on an overnight, cross-country flight. She is coming in cabin with me. We're good to go on the logistics: carrier, health certificate, I will carry her vet records with us, her flight is booked already, etc. but am wondering if others have suggestions that I am not thinking of to make the trip go easier.

We're planning to hit the dog beach that day before we leave so that she is nice and tired out before we get to the airport. ;)

Going through security is the part I know nothing about. I know she will need to come out of her bag for that. Does she go through the body scanner with me? Is that safe? Can she wear her collar when we go through or does that need to go through the x-ray machine?

I am going to bring a change of lining for her carrier and a plastic bag in case she potties on the one we put in there. I also might bring paper towels.

Should I bring treats to feed her during take-off and landing (will swallowing help her ears like it does for people?)? Is that safe? What about a bully stick to chew on during the flight? She gets cold really easily, so should I pack her a sweater and put it on her before we board?

Any advice you have would be wonderful! I am a little bit nervous but not too bad. I just want it to be as stress-free as possible.

  • I flew with my puppy in the cabin.

When going through security, your dog will have to come out of the bag and then you will walk through the scanner with her.  They did ask me to remove the collar/leash for this.  I can't remember if it had metal on it but if the collar has metal on it, you probably will have to remove it.  If you can have one that is all plastic, they might let you keep it on.  I think this part can be stressful if there are lines and you have a lot of stuff to carry.  My advice is to keep your other carry on items as well packed as possible so you have as little as possible to do when going through security.  I think I had everything else in one bag plus my dog in a bag so I didn't have a lot of things to fuss with going through security.

I did bring paper towels but didn't need them.  They are good to have just in case.

I did take a chew and some treats to try to keep him calm.  She might not want them but it's better have them.  During the flight, I would sometimes stick my hand in the carrier to show him I was there and try to keep him calm.  He was fine though and was mostly quiet and much quieter than kids on the flight.

  • sometimes, it could become very tough to have your puppy to flight. the one thing you must do to aware your pup about the steps. there are many security concerns at airport. the dog should be able to pass them successfully.

Thanks! Apparently on United the pet carrier counts as my 1 allowed carry-on bag, so I will only have the carrier and a medium sized purse, which will at least make the security and getting through the airport easier! :)
