Ack! I'm terrible at furniture layout. Heeeeeeelp!

Ugh, I need so much help with my living room layout. I have a bunch of great furniture and a bunch of space but it just isn't flowing correctly right now.

Can anyone pass along some tips or hints?

 The main furniture is:

2, 3-seater sofas

An overstuffed chair

An antique rocking chair

3 end tables of various sizes

Coffee table

Entertainment center

Small dining nook table

Bookshelf

I'm willing to work with what I have, but I'm also open for options for a few things that could improve the room (ie: a bigger coffee table? getting rid of the table??)

Thanks ahead of time if anyone has any insight!

PS- Just to further help with the picture, the french doors to out to a porch, the random gray square along the left wall is a bookshelf ;)

Re: Ack! I'm terrible at furniture layout. Heeeeeeelp!

  • It's hard without see the actual furniture but you could always try the sofas directly across from each other with the entertainment center on the end.
  • The reason I'm not a fan of arranging furniture online or on graph paper is because, to a large extent, furniture arranging isn't a mathematical question.  It's a gut feeling in many ways.

Your diagram above looks completely fine.  So if you're saying it isn't working, that's a feeling, one we can't pick up on from a computer-generated diagram.  If you post real pics, we can get a better feel of the room and might be able to help you more.

  • If the furniture your using is actually that size, then it's actually a pretty good arrangement - It has nice flow. Minor change i would make is switch the end table on the lower right hand to the upper right hand between the sofa, and put a floor lamp in the lower corner instead.

  • I'm wondering if its just too much furniture for the room?

I think a room has to be really large to fit (2) 3-seater sofa's and 2 chairs. I might move sofa off the wall perpendicular to the TV (the blue one), and move the overstuffed chair over there. An end table between the sofa and overstuffed chair.
