7 month pup won't stop chewing!!!
She has chewed apart two of my favorite pairs of shoes, a piece of wicker furniture AND now she's chewing the wooden kitchen chairs!!! I bought the bitter apple spray from Petco but it doesn't seem to phase her. Plus I don't know what to spray bc I never know what she's going to go after next. She chewed apart two television remotes as well. During the day I can keep an eye on her but at night she does most the chewing. My husband says tie her up at nite but I don't want to have to do that. Any thoughts??? Non toxic ways of stopping her? Thought about a Tabasco sauce spray hahaha
Re: 7 month pup won't stop chewing!!!
Why does she have free reign at night? That's pretty dangerous, if she's chewing things up like this and swallows something it could cause some major issues. I don't mean to sound snarky, or rude but these are things not everyone thinks about unless they've dealt with it before. Also, dogs destroy things when they're bored so if she isn't sleeping at night you may want to play with her before bed time or take her for a walk in the evening to get her tired. I don't keep my dogs crated at night, but they are limited to staying in our bedroom with us with nothing they can get into.
You are right in correcting her as soon as you see her chewing on something she isn't supposed to. You've got to be consistent. The sprays never worked for ours either, so I don't recommend those.
My girl learned very quickly, we never had to work very hard with her. My boy on the other hand was more difficult, he would destroy shoes before I could even do anything. The thing that worked for him was I caught him chewing on a shoe which he knew was wrong, he dropped it, and I tapped him on the butt with it, and made him go to bed. To this day he's never touched another shoe, even when friends come over and have new shoes that smell like their dogs he never touches them.
What breed is your dog? I have a 4 month old female German Sheperd, and she has already chewed a hole in my carpet, part of the sheetrock, and various other things in the house, and she hasn't even lost her teeth yet!
PP is right, this is just what puppies do. The first year of growth is when puppies are losing their baby teeth and getting their adult teeth. Make sure you have plenty of toys for your puppy. I really like the Nylabone bones and toys because they are made of hard plastic and are really made for teething puppies. My puppy really likes them, and it has seemed to stop a lot of her chewing habits. Also, a tired puppy is a good puppy, as many people say. And I would also consider crate training her. If you wait too much longer it will be a lot harder to train her. Good luck!
Thanks for the comments. She is a mix, I think part golden. We rescued her from being put down at 5 wks. So we never got to see the original owner to find out what she is. I do keep plenty of toys, we have a few nylabone ones around too. I guess I'll try tiring her out before bed. We tried crate training her a while ago but she whined all night for like 3 wks. My husband and I have to be up early for work so we couldn't deal with that noise any longer.
When she does chew something I show her what she chewed and tell her no. Sometimes I give a tap on the butt, and always I send her to lay down. This is my first puppy so I appreciate your opinions. W have a 9yr old border collie too and I think part of the reason she's so frustrating is bc he is so smart and easy!
Getting her in a crate at night would eliminate the problem completely. There aren't many sure-fire solutions with dogs, but that's one of them.
Also, it doesn't do you any good to show her what she's done after the fact and scold her. If you aren't catching her in the act, it's worthless. She has no idea what you're reprimanding her for.
Sorry, I know puppies are hard.
My pup chewed at my furnature (no replaced thank goodness) my shoes and anything she could sink her teeth into. Unfortunately due to teething they need something to chew on. I found though buying teething toys really helped.
Also maybe try buying her a rope toy, soaking it in water, putting it in the freezer to harden then give it to her. It's very soothing on their teeth and gums. My pup loved it.
