At what age do you think kids should have TVs in their rooms?

With the move approaching and DD being older now, she's starting to express her own opinions about how she wants her room. Of course, one of her requests is a TV. On one hand I feel like it's unecessary (we will have plenty of places for her to watch TV downstairs), and I also feel like it could create problems (primarily with her wanting to watch at bedtime).

So I'm leaning toward "no," but wanted to see what other parents were doing!

Re: At what age do you think kids should have TVs in their rooms?

  • I don't know what my answer would be other than, for Jake, definitely not now!  He would totally turn it on when he should be sleeping.  Plus, I sometimes send him to his room for cool off periods...while it's not exactly a punishment, I don't want it to be something that he looks forward to doing because there's a TV there.

I never had a TV in my room until I went to college, so I was a deprived child!

  • I'm thinking my answer is never!  We have a finished basement with a TV, so if they want to watch TV away from the main living area, then that is where they can go. Of course my thoughts might change as my boys get older, but I really don't see the benefit of having a TV in their room.
  • I don't think it should be until at least 5.  That being said, I'm the hypocrite who has one in Bs room (her room is/was the guest room so we had a small 32 in LCD on the dresser for our guests since they are 90% of the time up before us so they usually stay in the room and get ready/watch tv do they don't go downstairs and wake us up as that would wake up Crosby who next would wake us up).  As part of bedtime, we do let B watch about 10 min before bed (until the next commercial).  She doesn't watch it any other time in her room and has never turned it on aside from bedtime (part of our routine is her turning on and off the tv so she knows it's the last step before bed).

  • Seb will probably have a tv in his room when he gets to be around 9 or 10.  His father loves video games and I'm sure that will wear off on him so, that would be about the only reason for why I would find it beneficial for him to have one in his room.

  • Um... 18?  hahaha.. I never had one until I was in college.  And then I developed a bad habit of staying up late watching tv while laying in bed... so I understand why it wasn't an option for me in highschool.

Eleni is not getting a tv in her room anytime soon.  we have one in our room, one in the family room and a small one in the eat in kitchen. More than enough for the 3 of us!

  • I hope never for us as well. In our new house we'll likely have TV's in both the family room & media room (plus our bedroom), so I don't see the need to have another TV in their rooms. I'd prefer that their bedrooms remain sleep & study places, not to mention that I dont want to pay Directv another dime!

My brothers and I got TV's around 13 but honestly after that I dont remember spending much time watching TV as a family. We all just kind of went and did our own thing.... I'd like to avoid that with my own kids.

  • At this point (I know opinions change) I think I am in the never camp as well.  I didn't ahve one until college.

I even remember when I was sick with stomach flus in middle school and high school and would stay in bed all day, my dad would carry in a tv and drag the cable hook up through the hall for me.  But once I was up and about, back to my parents room it went.

I was 9 or 10 when I got one in my room and there are various reasons similar to Sara's why I'd like to avoid it with our kids. We will probably have a media/tv room eventually that is in addition to the living room TV. That should suffice.

As it is, DH and I stay up too late with the TV. A habit that we need to adjust and don't want to pass on.

  • I never had my own tv until I was in college.  And I noticed that coming home over the summer and all I speant a lot less time with my family and a lot more locked in my room watching something on tv or movies.  I don't agree with TVS in bedrooms at all.  I think you should have a tv in your living room and maybe a playroom but that is all.

I don't like what happens when there are too many tvs in a house.

  • I wouldn't even consider it until high school, and that's only if the boys prove to be good students. I really don't see the need for it, to be honest. Right now we have a tv in the LR, we'll have one in the den (which will be the office/play room when completed) and one in my bedroom.

Right now when we have a rained-in Saturday, if DH and I want to watch something, then the boys watch cartoons in our room (on the only two channels in our room that has them: Cartoon Network and Sprout). Our house is a ranch, so we can still monitor what and how much they watch very easily.

As for you all who joke that you were deprived not having a tv in your rooms until college, my parents wouldn't let us watch tv Mon-Thursday at ALL, during the school year, until we were in college!

  • Yeah, I don't see many benefits, but there are definitely drawbacks (fights over watching it, expense, etc.). Of course I'm also not sure if it's worth the fights over not having it, since she sleeps in our room and we'd definitely have regulations on when it could be used.

Can anyone guess who planted this seed in her mind to begin with? I'm sure you can...

  • Never. We never had them in our room growing up, and my H and I don't even have one in our room now.

    Ha, typical!

I've overheard MIL mentioning how cute the pink princess TV's are more than once. If she ever shows up at our house with one I'm guaranteed to flip!

I had one in my room as a teenager, but I never used it much. I'm in the never category now, but who knows if that will change down the line. But, definitely not before the age of 16.

  • Never.  Period.  Don't care how much they beg & plead.  The last thing I want to happen in the few hours I get to see my kids after work for their butts to be in their rooms watching tv.  It leads to inactivity, constant commercial watching ("mom can I have ??") and a general numbing of the mind.  IMO.  We have tvs in the rooms on vacation at the beach & all of nephews/nieces were constantly watching.  Hello we are at the beach!  I've seen what happens and no thanks.  Plus, I want us to watch as a family so we can enjoy it together or discuss together.

I don't think I ever had a tv in my room even when I moved back home after college & during law school and the same goes for them.  Frankly I'd like to get rid of the one in our room too but I'm not sure how I'd ever watch all my dvr'd shows Stick out tongue

I didn't have one in my room until I was old enough to buy it myself - so I was at least 16 or 17.

I won't say never, but that's how I feel right now. I also won't be putting a computer in her room. I feel like things are easier to monitor if they're in the common areas.

She put one in the room she lets DD sleep in at her house as soon as she was out of her crib. And then wanted to know why she quit napping!

  • When they are adults and can buy their own TV to put in their apartment or house which they can also pay for.  I did not have a TV in my room until I was an adult and had my own place.  For kids I am really not happy with too much technology in their bedrooms.  If I had a TV in my room as a teenager I would have never slept.  Bedrooms are for reading books.

I'm in the never camp. Steve and I don't even have one in our bedroom. We're of the mindset that the bedroom is a place to sleep. There are enough other TVs in our house that we don't need them in the bedrooms as well.

My aunt actually gave the boys one of those small tv's with a built in dvd player in it for Christmas!  I in turn gave it to my sister for her dorm, when hers died.....hahahahaha!

  • Not for a realllly long time. I'd like to say never, but we'll play it by ear as she gets older. I don't think any younger than a teenager, though.
  • I would say never, but I think a few years from now (or even today, really) kids won't even have a need for tvs in their room....they'll have their own portable tablets/phones/whatever new technology will be there that will be much harder to keep out of their rooms!

  • And here I was thinking I was the only kid in the world who wasn't allowed to have a TV in my room growing up. :) Logan has one in his room now, but that was more of 'where the heck do we move this?' situation. As soon as he's old enough to realize it's there we're moving it!

  • We dont even have a TV in our room! I am not sure when I would consider that...avoid as long as possible? Maybe when he is 10???

My sister and I got one for Christmas one year and I think we were like 4 and  8 ( I was 8)...but we shared a room, we had no family room and only one TV.

We are going fixing up our basement and although it will in no way be "Finished" it will have a nice space we plan on using as a family room type area. We will get a 2nd TV for down there, but I am really not looking forward to paying for another cable box...

  • Never.  I think it's just another way for kids and especially teenagers to seperate themselves from the family and to just veg out.
