New over here - paint help, please!

Hi!

I'm new to decorating. We moved about 3 months ago (our last house we didn't do much with since it wasn't our forever house).  I'm getting ready to tackle the living/dining room. I was hoping that you could point me in the right direction of paint colors & options.

Here are the basics : 24x13 room.  5 windows - 4 narrow and long, 1 wider and same length - that are north and east facing. 2 doorways - one is over size, the other is regular.  Half the room is a living room, the back corner is a dining room - with an over head light.  All trim is white.

Furinture is a cream/khaki type color, light cream carpet (though at some point we may do hardwood in there, we haven't decided yet, because its down the road anyway). Dining room table is white (and I'll get a table cloth or placemats to flow once I get everything else figured out).  I fell in love with dark brown curtains that have a diamond pattern on them, and some of the diamonds are see through and let filterd light in.

So, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I stink at decorating!

Thanks!

  • It sounds like your furniture is all very neutral. With such neutral furniture, you may wish to bring some color to the walls.  The brown diamond curtains sound striking.   With northern/eastern light through the windows, you may want to add a warm color.  Gold, coral, apple green, brick red would all be very pretty in that situation and go with your chocolate brown curtains and neutral furniture.

You may want to add two complementary shades--one in the dining area and a second in the living area then use accessories to join the rooms.  If you did coral in the living room and apple green in the dining room, you may wish to add coral placemats to the dining room and apple green pillows to the living room.

Soft furnishings such as pillows, rugs, placemats, curtains are a great way to link two rooms in an open floor plan.
